Pep Guardiola hailed Gianluigi Donnarumma's Manchester City debut, but the reaction from his teammates to the Italian's stunning save from Bryan Mbeumo was what pleased him most of all.

The 26-year-old produced a faultless display at the Etihad, commanding his area from crosses and then making a sensational one-handed save to keep out Mbeumo's volley.

After that several of his City teammates went over to celebrate with the £26million deadline day save and that reaction suggested to Guardiola that his squad are building the spirit required for success.

"He played really good. You know in the corners, it's dangerous and especially in the save and everyone remember him," said the City boss.

"I like the save and after the reaction from Josko, from Ruben, from Rodri, going [to him] Every player wants to be loved, all of us want to be loved and when a team share the good emotions together, there are many good moments and bad moments, they start to be a good team and that is what they have to create.

"Create [a situation] that everybody is allowed to do bad actions, his mates will be there supporting and the good ones be grateful for the good action they have done and when this happens, it's the only step I knew after tactics come later, later, later. But we know we brought a player with incredible experience.

"With the national team, his performances were massive and last season with PSG. He was happy in Paris. He told me that. But the moment he was on the market he was happy to come to Premier League, to enjoy this new adventure."

The defence in front of Donnarumma also contained a new look for City, with 21-year-old Abdukodir Khusanov chosen as right-back ahead of Rico Lewis and Matheus Nunes.

Guardiola will continue to rotate in that position but said the Uzbekistan international's pace is a valuable weapon, even if he is still refining his game.

"We have in the next 11 months to play every three days. If you believe Khusanov is going to play all the games, there's no human being who can do that," said Guardiola.

"We need the players back, but I know for his physicality, he's so young, he has to learn, but he's so fast. And he closes that side really, really, really well.

"Sometimes his energy makes him to take not the right decisions. We talk a lot since we arrived at this question of time, but you know, they're always so fast and the players can play there. He has an incredible speed and always has been concentrated. And today he played really, really good."
