Manchester City were 4-1 winners over Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Wednesday night
Manchester City moved a step closer to securing a spot in the Champions League knockout stages with a 4-1 win over Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday night, but the Blues did not have it all their own way.
A dominant first hour had City three goals up and coasting thanks to a Phil Foden double and an Erling Haaland strike. But Dortmund refused to give in and threatened a comeback when Waldemar Anton slotted home.
At that point the German visitors were asking all the questions but a late Rayan Cherki effort secured the points for City.
It was an encouraging display from the Blues but boss Pep Guardiola will have been disappointed with the way his side allowed Dortmund back into the contest and the Etihad chief was visibly frustrated with Jeremy Doku for switching off in allowing Anton to score from a quickly-taken free kick.
Indeed, despite the positives to take from the performance, Guardiola spoke to Doku on the pitch after the contest to get his point across, showing just how much the City chief wanted both a flawless performance and also a clean sheet.
Asked by TNT Sports about the conversation, Doku said: "Because there was a misunderstanding with their goal with the free kick. But we always want to improve and be the best."
The winger, who created the second for Erling Haaland, added: "It was a great night against a good opponent. I think we started well and scored some good goals. The second half was a bit difficult but as a team we are very happy with this victory.
"I enjoyed it. I feel like I can still improve a lot more, in my final passes, in front of goal, but today I enjoyed it and I'm just going to rest now because there is a big game ahead."
That big game is Liverpool at the Eithad on Sunday, where a victory would ensure City go into the November international break in second spot in the Premier League table and on the back of three straight victories.
"[Winning] that would make it a perfect week before the international break," added Doku. "We have to rest well, recover well and prepare well for them."
