Liverpool or Southampton will have to wait 24 hours to learn which side they will face in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.
Only one of Arne Slot or Will Still’s sides will be in the hat for the next stage, of course, with the pair set to lock horns at Anfield on Tuesday. Liverpool is heavy favorite for the match, despite Arne Slot confirming he plans to heavily rotate his starting XI against the Championship side.
The game is one of 12 to be played across Tuesday and Wednesday, along with Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Everton, Huddersfield Town vs Manchester City, and Port Vale vs. Arsenal.
After the latter, which will be broadcast live on Sky Sports in the UK and Paramount+ in the USA, the draw will be made for the fourth round. The clash at Vale Park kicks off at 20:00 BST (15:00 ET/12:00 PT), so the draw will take place around 22:00 BST (17:00 ET/14:00 PT).
Liverpool or Southampton will be ball no.12 when the names are drawn out, while four of the sides have already been confirmed.
With the Europa League and Europa Conference League returning this week, the three sides involved in the competitions - Aston Villa, Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest - played their Carabao Cup third-round ties last week.
Villa and Forest were eliminated by Brentford and Swansea City, while Palace beat Millwall on penalties to progress.
The final club confirmed in the fourth round is Grimsby Town. The League Two side’s remarkable run continues and, after dumping out Manchester United in the second round, beat crisis-hit Sheffield Wednesday last week.
The likes of Chelsea, City, Arsenal, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur will hope to secure passage to the fourth round across Tuesday and Wednesday.
Matches in the next stage of the competition will be in the week commencing October 27, which would slot in between Liverpool’s Premier League matches against Brentford and Aston Villa.
Speaking ahead of the Southampton clash, Arne Slot said: “There's no trophy we underestimate, we always want to win every trophy we compete for.
“But that's the good thing about the quality of the squad we have, that we still have a very good team that we can play. But we have to think about the long-term as well.
“If we want to compete in every single trophy then some players need a normal week, which is not playing during the week once in a while as well. That's managing a team throughout the whole season with trying to compete at every level we are competing for.”
