Where are the 11 players who started Jurgen Klopp's first game at Liverpool

With today marking 10 years since Jurgen Klopp's appointment, there has been plenty of content floating around regarding the German's Liverpool tenure.

One graphic that is regularly shared by fans online is the one of Klopp's first-ever starting XI, against Tottenham at White Hart Lane in October 2015.

Liverpool emerged with a creditable point on that day courtesy of a goalless draw, but Klopp was well aware that the squad was in need of major surgery, and went about changing it over the next few transfer windows.

Many of the players who lined up against Spurs were gone within a couple of years, but where are they now?

GK - Simon Mignolet

Mignolet left Liverpool in 2018 after Klopp decided to bring in Alisson as his new No.1. The Belgian returned to his homeland with Club Brugge in a $8m (£6.4m/€7.5m) deal and is still playing at 37. He has won four Pro League titles with the club.

RB - Nathaniel Clyne

Ex-England international Clyne was on Liverpool's books until 2020 but found opportunities hard to come by after Trent Alexander-Arnold's emergence. He made just 10 appearances in three seasons with the club.

Clyne, now 34, rejoined Crystal Palace on a free transfer and has continued to perform well in the Premier League. He is contracted to Palace until next summer.

CB - Martin Skrtel

Skrtel left Liverpool at the end of Klopp's first season, completing a move to Turkey to join Fenerbahce. He later joined rivals Istanbul Basaksehir and helped the club win its first ever league title. The defender, now 40, ended his playing career back in Slovakia with Spartak Trnava in 2022, and is now the club's sporting director.

CB - Mamadou Sakho

The French defender's Anfield career ended on a sour note after he was sent home from a pre-season tour of the United States in 2016. He later joined Crystal Palace and spent four years at the club before moving to Montpellier.

Sakho left the Ligue 1 side in November 2023 after a training ground bust-up with manager Michel Der Zakarian. He joined Torpedo Kutaisi in Georgia in 2024 but spent just a few months there, and now owns a luxury property business in Dubai.

LB - Alberto Moreno

Moreno is now at Italian club Como, having spent five years at Villarreal after leaving Liverpool in 2019. He had made just a handful of appearances in his final season at Anfield and was released.

He scored in Villarreal's penalty shootout success in the Europa League final in 2021 and taunted defeated opponent Manchester United afterwards, much to the enjoyment of Liverpool supporters.

CM - Lucas Leiva

Lucas was a regular in Klopp's first season at Anfield before departing for Lazio in 2017. During his time in Italy, he helped the Serie A side win the Coppa Italia before returning to boyhood club Gremio. The Brazilian midfielder retired in March 2023 after scans showed a scar on his heart.

Speaking to This Is Anfield in July of this year, Lucas said he is studying ahead of making a decision on what to do next: “Of course, I had a difficult retirement but yeah, you know, just enjoy taking my time, studying a lot to understand the next step.”

CM - Emre Can

German midfielder Can left Anfield on a free transfer in 2018 to join Juventus but his time in Italy didn't work out.

He returned to his homeland with Borussia Dortmund in 2020 and has been an important player for the Bundesliga side, which he now captains.

RM - James Milner

James Milner will turn 40 in January but he is still going strong in the Premier League with Brighton. The former England midfielder was key to Liverpool's successes under Klopp, playing in a variety of different positions.

He left on a free transfer in 2023, signing for Brighton on a free. Milner looks set to beat Gareth Barry's all-time Premier League appearance record this season.

CAM - Philippe Coutinho

Coutinho is still only 33 but his career has not gone to plan since he left Liverpool in 2018. He joined Barcelona in a $177m (£140m/€163m) deal but after a bright start was loaned out to Bayern Munich.

The Brazilian also had a loan spell at Aston Villa before earning a permanent deal but he was not part of Unai Emery's plans, and he is now back at boyhood club Vasco da Gama in Brazil.

LM - Adam Lallana

Lallana's time at Anfield was hampered by injuries and he left in 2020 to join Brighton on a free transfer. He spent four years there before returning to Southampton last season.

Lallana announced his retirement in June of this year but remains at Southampton as a first-team coach.

CF - Divock Origi

Origi would go on to etch his name into Liverpool folklore by scoring in the Champions League final in 2019. He was at Anfield until his contract expired in 2022, when he joined AC Milan.

His move to Milan has been disastrous, and he hasn't played for the first team since May 2023, having spent the 2023-24 season on loan at Nottingham Forest, and been banished upon his return to Milan. He is set to become a free agent next summer.
