He’s enjoyed ups and downs at Tottenham, but Guglielmo Vicario is still a key figure and the undisputed number one goalkeeper at the club.
Tottenham replaced club icon Hugo Lloris with the relatively unknown Guglielmo Vicario back in the summer of 2023, and he’s made quite the impact, for better or worse, since arriving in North London.
It’s safe to say Vicario has his critics, but he’s also produced plenty of match-winning moments for the team. He’s one of the most experienced players in the squad, and a key figure behind the scenes, too.
Interestingly, it’s thought Spurs will sign a new goalkeeper in the summer of 2026, which could put Vicario’s spot at risk. But, until then, here’s all you need to know about him.

Guglielmo Vicario’s time at Tottenham
In the first half of the 2023/24 campaign, Vicario was a shining light in Ange Postecoglou’s side. He kept clean sheets, made huge saves, and showed his leadership skills with vocal, passionate displays between the sticks.
However, in the second half of that first season, cracks began to show. Opposition players realised Vicario was weak in the air and was unable to command his box, and a number of errors creeped into his game – particularly when defending set-pieces.
Since then, question marks have hung over Vicario’s head. The arrival of Antonin Kinsky in January 2025 threatened to push Vicario down the pecking order, but he stood firm and retained his number one shirt.
Vicario has praised Thomas Frank, and it’s clear the Dane backs his goalkeeper, too. Still, long-term, it does look like the Italian stopper will move on.
Inter Milan want to sign Vicario in 2026, and reports suggest Spurs are hoping to replace Vicario at some point in the near future.
Vicario’s career before joining Spurs
The Italian ‘keeper spent his entire career in his homeland before joining Spurs, turning out for the likes of Venezia, Udinese, Cagliari, and Perugia before landing at Empoli. It’s there that he would really get himself noticed.
The 2022/23 campaign was a real breakthrough season for Vicario, as he conceded just 39 goals in 31 Serie A appearances for Empoli, keeping seven clean sheets along the way.
Out of all the keepers in Serie A that season, Vicario had the third most impressive stats when it came to saving expected goals – meaning he saved more than he was actually expected to (as per FBRef). He was also in the top five for attempted passes out from the back and second when it came to stopping crosses.
Vicario signed for Empoli on a permanent basis in the summer of 2022, after spending the previous season on loan with the Italian club. He began his career in the Udinese academy.
He’s broken into the Italy squad since joining Spurs
Vicario was part of numerous Italy squads stretching back to late 2022, but he was always on the bench and never managed to get on the pitch to make his debut. That is until he showed what he could at Tottenham.
He made his first senior appearance for Italy in a 2-0 win over Ecuador in March 2024 and kept another clean sheet in a 0-0 draw with Turkey in June of that year.
However, his involvement has been sporadic since then. More time on the bench has been broken up by just three more appearances. That said, he’s only lost one game with the Azzurri and has only conceded two goals in his five games to date.

What are Guglielmo Vicario’s strengths and weaknesses?
We are particularly impressed by Vicario’s quick reactions and agility in goal. Many of his best saves come when the keeper is faced with close-range efforts or deflected shots that he has had to adjust to rapidly. He is also very good at getting down to the ground and tipping shots away from his goal.
Vicario is also a good leadership figure who has been given increased responsibilities by both former manager, Ange Postecoglou, and his current boss Thomas Frank. He wears his heart on his sleeves, demands more from his teammates, and never hides away in the bad moments, either.
The one big weakness that stands out in Vicario’s repertoire would be the way he commands his area. He’s outmuscled regularly and struggles to claim the ball in the air. This issue has led to numerous errors and a slew of goals over the years.
His long-range distribution is also fairly weak, but to be fair, Vicario is fairly good with the ball at his feet and is often confident enough to play it short to teammates around him to compensate.
Vicario’s salary and market value
As per Transfermarkt, Guglielmo Vicario is currently valued at around £26m. That’s an increase on the £17m Spurs paid for him in 2023.
It’s thought Vicario is paid £75,000 per week (according to Capology). That was the initial contract he signed with Spurs, which runs through to the summer of 2028. His earnings are believed to be on par with the likes of Rodrigo Bentancur, Destiny Udogie, and Archie Gray.
Personal information
Guglielmo Vicario was born in Udine, Italy on 7 October, 1996.
He is 1.94m tall, which equates to roughly 6ft 3inches. Vicario weighs 83kg, which is largely due to his tall frame.
While Vicario keeps his personal life fairly private and doesn’t really post about any love interest in his life, his parents do play a big part in his public-facing persona. His mother and father have attended plenty of Spurs matches and are very popular with the fans.
You can find Vicario on Instagram, where he has over 463,000 followers.
