Why £107m Chelsea summer transfer decision could be catastrophic for BlueCo

Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez cast doubt over his future at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday evening when he admitted he was uncertain where he will be playing his football next season

"I don't know," said Enzo Fernandez when asked about his Chelsea future on Tuesday night. "We'll see," he added.

Hardly reassuring from a Chelsea perspective that their vice-captain will be playing his football at Stamford Bridge next season. Their £107million signing, once a British transfer record, cast serious doubt over his future at the club with those comments in the immediate aftermath of Chelsea's defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

The noise around Fernandez's future has been consistent over the last couple of months. Real Madrid and PSG are said to be interested in the Argentina international, but Chelsea supporters chose to block said noise out, until those comments. Fernandez opened the door to leaving SW6 on Tuesday evening, even if the comments were reactionary and potentially in the heat of the moment.

BlueCo, the consortium formed by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital following their purchase of the club almost four years ago, do not plan on losing their key players. While Fernandez is a divisive figure among Blues supporters, there cannot be too much division over his significance in the squad given he has played more minutes than anyone else this season.

Losing the 25-year-old would be an enormous blow for BlueCo. If one of their key players go, who is to say the others won't look to follow him out of the door?

There was all that speculation over Cole Palmer's future in January. That's all it was, speculation. Sources close to the club informed football.london at the time that Palmer was 'untouchable' from their point of view. Liam Rosenior quickly followed suit in a press conference.

Reece James signed a long-term contract extension just last week and that is seen as a big moment for BlueCo. Rosenior said as much: "I can't stop smiling because we secured the best player in world football in his position.

"He had many, many opportunities to leave this magnificent club. The good thing is not just the size and the stature of the club. He's come through from a very, very young age, with belief and confidence in what we're doing here, where we want to go.

"We've had many conversations about it. For him to sign a deal and put his faith in us is a massive step."

While that was a boost to BlueCo's project at Chelsea, there is no denying that if Fernandez leaves, and if he pushes to do so (it is worth noting there is - at this stage - no suggestion he will), then that will undoubtedly be a blow.

That is why securing Champions League football for a second successive season is imperative for Chelsea. These star players need to see that the project is sustainable. They want to be playing on the world's biggest stage.

Eight cup finals to come for Chelsea. And the possibility of an actual cup final, also.
