Why Mason Melia has not yet been spotted in Tottenham training after January arrival

Alasdair Gold has revealed why we have not seen Mason Melia training with the Tottenham first-team or being named in a matchday squad yet by Thomas Frank.

Spurs signed Mason Melia from St Patrick’s Athletic for £1.6m plus add-ons back in February of last year, with the youngster seen as one of the best young talents to emerge from Irish football over recent years.

The forward had to wait until he turned 18 to arrive at Tottenham Hotspur, due to the post-Brexit rules, and that time has now finally come.

The striker finished the 2025 season with 13 goals and four assists from 35 league matches for St Pat’s as well as a goal and an assist in the Europa Conference League qualifiers.

Tottenham starlet Mason Melia is dealing with an injury

Some Spurs fans would have been hoping to see the teenager given an immediate opportunity in N17, given the issues Tottenham have upfront, but he has been spotted in training so far.

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has now revealed that Melia is dealing with a very minor back complaint at the moment.

Tottenham are now working on overcoming the injury so that the 18-year-old can hit the ground running when he starts training at Hotspur Way.

Gold adds that Frank will take a closer look at the teenager before deciding whether he will train with the first-team or if he could benefit from a loan move this month.

Why Melia is unlikely to be loaned out by Spurs

Whether Melia joins the first-team or the U21s remains to be seen, with the youngster making a big jump from the League of Ireland.

However, there is no doubting his talent, with Tottenham having to fend off interest from many clubs across Europe to secure Melia’s services.

One would think that the youngster would be given the next few months to try to adapt to the demands of his new surroundings before a loan move is considered ahead of next season.
