Phil Foden's problems are continuing this season with the Manchester City midfielder ruled out of the Brighton game with injury. Foden is joined on the treatment table by summer signing Rayan Cherki to give Pep Guardiola another selection headache with Savinho also still missing with injury.

Savinho has been absent all season with an unspecified problem. Tottenham were keen on signing the Brazilian, who appeared open to the move, but City have closed the door on an exit and expect the player to return after the international break.

Foden looked to have put a difficult season behind him as he played with a smile on his face at the Club World Cup and was ready to try to return to the levels that saw him named the Premier League's best player for the 2023/24 season. However, he missed the final friendly of the summer with an ankle injury that saw him out of the squad for the Premier League opener at Wolves.

He was on the bench at home to Spurs last week and came on for a few minutes, but is missing again at Brighton having been described as 'not fully fit'. The 25-year-old was left out of the England squad for the upcoming September games and he faces a battle to recover his fitness and his form.

Cherki was named in the France squad, but he may have to withdraw if he is unable to get over the injury issue that has kept him out of this game. Cherki started against Spurs but suffered an issue this week that has ruled him out.

Guardiola has also had to deal with a limited return for Rodri after his serious injury last season. The Ballon d'Or winner suffered a groin injury at the Club World Cup as part of ongoing complications from his ACL issue and he has barely featured in the opening two matches.

Despite that, Rodri has been called up to the Spain squad for their upcoming matches. Guardiola refused to make an issue of it at his press conference ahead of Brighton, and has picked him to start against Brighton.

Josko Gvardiol remains injured, meaning City are missing four players for their Premier League match at Brighton.
