Tottenham Hotspur have sent a few of their youngsters out on loan this season, including academy starlet Mikey Moore.
The England Under-19 international has endured a difficult few months at Scottish side Rangers, where he is yet to find the net but has registered one assist in his opening ten appearances for the eighth-placed Premiership outfit.
While Tottenham hold an option to recall the winger in January, with several Championship clubs reportedly interested in taking him on, the club must remain patient and avoid making a hasty decision – here’s why.
Moore’s early start to life at Rangers
Mikey Moore is a player of enormous potential, having burst onto the scene under former boss Ange Postecoglou when he made his senior debut for Tottenham aged just sixteen.
He went on to make nineteen appearances in all competitions last season, and a temporary move away for regular game time was the logical next step in his development.
The youngster has featured in every game for Rangers so far, starting three of their five league matches. Although he has struggled to influence proceedings, it would be unfair to place the blame solely on him.
James Maddison once compared Moore to Neymar after his dazzling display in the Europa League against AZ Alkmaar last term, a reminder of the talent he possesses when in the right environment.
With the talent the Tottenham youngster has, it is no surprise Rangers picked him up in the summer, while Moore also attracted interest from a host of European clubs, including Borussia Dortmund.
Why Tottenham should not recall Mikey Moore from Rangers
Rangers is a top club in Scotland with great history, but they are currently enduring a poor run of form, having scored just six goals in seven Premiership games.
The entire team is struggling, with the top scorer of Rangers managing just three goals all season, and it is no surprise that Moore’s goal involvement is quite low.
The light blues recently dismissed Russell Martin in a bid to turn things around, and a managerial change could work in Moore’s favour.
The arrival of a new gaffer would likely bring renewed confidence and structure, and that kind of atmosphere could help the Tottenham loanee rediscover his spark.
Moore’s ability is not in question. He scored a hat-trick for the England Under-19 side during the international break, showing the level he can reach when surrounded by a functioning team.
As long as he continues to get minutes on the pitch at Rangers, there is no need for Tottenham to panic. Experiencing difficult periods away from home is part of a young player’s education, and how he handles them will shape his progress.
Knee-jerk decisions, such as recalling him and sending him out to another club, could hurt the youngster, who would have to adapt to new surroundings.
