Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur could be out of the World Cup

A report in ESPN Deportes speculates on Uruguay’s final squad for the World Cup and has made a concerning revelation about Rodrigo Bentancur.

The report says that the Tottenham Hotspur man is one of five midfielders whose status in the squad is assured under Marcelo Bielsa.

However, the outlet points out that Bentancur is out of action due to an injury and states that he is ‘doubtful for the World Cup’.

If this report is right in suggesting that the 28-year-old is not guaranteed to be fit for this summer’s tournament, that suggests that he is unlikely to play for Tottenham again this season.

Marcelo Bielsa has referenced Bentancur’s injury

The South American nation was held to two draws by England and Algeria during the international break, and their head coach spoke about the players who are out injured.

Beilsa touched on Bentancur’s situation but did not provide any information on when the Tottenham man is expected to return.

The Uruguay boss said: “Those mentioned, like Ronald Araujo, Rodrigo Bentancur, Nicolás De la Cruz, and Darwin Núñez, are players who have faced different situations. Bentancur suffered a long-term injury and is currently recovering.

“Darwin hasn’t played competitively for some time, and De la Cruz is a player who was crucial during Uruguay’s best period and is now trying to find his form and become a starter for Flamengo, which is what we want. Plans always have nuances that arise from reality.”
