Xabi Alonso is on the market following his firing by Real Madrid, but he may not be out of a job for long, with another of his old clubs potentially needing a new boss this year

Many Liverpool fans have their heart set on Xabi Alonso returning to the club as a replacement for Arne Slot, who is the subject of increasing discontent among supporters.
The Reds are currently on a 12-game unbeaten streak, but that has done nothing to ease the pressure on Slot from fans. Of those 12 games, six have been draws – including four of the last five in all competitions – and the team is still awaiting its first Premier League win of 2026.
Although Slot still has the backing of the club, securing Champions League qualification is said to be the minimum requirement this season, according to a report published by The Athletic over the weekend.

And it won't get any easier for Liverpool in the coming days, with a tricky Champions League trip to Marseille on Wednesday's agenda.
The firing of Alonso by Real Madrid has added an extra dimension to Liverpool's managerial situation.

But it has been suggested that the former Spain midfielder could be on his way back to the Bundesliga later this year.
Alonso left Bayer Leverkusen to take the Madrid job in 2025, but Bayern Munich could be on the lookout for a new boss in the offseason, with ESPN's Mark Ogden suggesting that Vincent Kompany could be heading back to Manchester City.
Discussing the managerial situation at Manchester United, Ogden said: “I just want to kind of drop something that I was told last week.
“So when the whole Man United situation was going off, and I was speaking to somebody talking about United and just a kind of a cheeky little, ‘why not consider Xabi Alonso?’
"And obviously, I know the answer is that he played for Liverpool, etc.
"But he was like, 'No, no, no, that’s not going to happen.'
“He said, and the story that this guy had been told, and he has a bit of insight was that they said, no, Xabi Alonso will end up at Bayern Munich this summer, and Vincent Kompany will go to Man City because Man City wants Vincent Kompany back, and Xabi Alonso is an obvious fit for Bayern Munich.
"Because as much of a legend as he is at Liverpool, he’s also a great at Bayern Munich.”
