Xabi Alonso has emerged as a potential next Liverpool manager after being fired by Real Madrid midway through his first season.

As pressure intensifies on Arne Slot amid a turbulent campaign, there has been plenty of chatter about whether or not the Liverpool head coach will be replaced this summer or sooner if the Reds’ season continues to spiral.

Alonso, a former Liverpool midfielder and club legend, is now a free agent and has been tabbed as Slot’s potential successor if things continue to sour. The former Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid man is currently listed as the EVS favourite in the betting market to become Liverpool’s next permanent manager.

Alonso lasted fewer than eight months at Real Madrid after coming over from Germany, where he famously led Bayer Leverkusen on a 51-game unbeaten run and won the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal in the 2023-24 season.

After his record-breaking season, Alonso was linked to Liverpool once Jurgen Klopp stepped away, but the Spaniard opted for one more season in Germany and Slot was hired as Klopp’s successor.

Alonso’s stint with Los Blancos started brightly but quickly took a turn with a string of poor results, including a 3-2 loss to Barcelona in the Supercopa de España final, and disputes with star forward Vinicius Junior . He was let go on January 12, one day after Madrid’s defeat to its arch rivals.

Reports indicate that Alonso, still a highly-regarded coach, could be part of a managerial merry-go-round this summer if Pep Guardiola leaves Manchester City and Bayern Munich’s Vincent Kompany is chosen as his successor, which would open up the manager role at another one of Alonso’s former clubs.

Several dominoes need to fall in order for that scenario to come to fruition, while a continued run of poor form may be enough to unseat Slot and open up the Liverpool job.

Slot is said to still have the backing of the club, but his fortunes could soon change if Liverpool bow out of the Champions League earlier than expected and finish outside of the top-four or five in the Premier League this season.

If the Dutchman is let go, the odds indicate Alonso will assuredly be one of the favourites to replace him.

Others in the running for the Liverpool job, should it become available, are Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner (11/2), who has already confirmed he will leave the London club this summer, ex-Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp (8/1), and Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola (8/1).
