Xavi Simons has revealed his pride in taking on Tottenham’s iconic number seven shirt, following in the footsteps of one of the club’s greatest modern players.

Tottenham Hotspur have finally secured their creative midfielder after several days of speculation and rejection.

Xavi Simons has completed his move from RB Leipzig to Tottenham in a deal worth about €60 million (£51m), with the Dutch international signing a five-year contract that also includes a two-year option.

The 22-year-old arrives from the Bundesliga with a strong reputation for goals and creativity, having scored 22 times and registered 24 assists across 78 appearances in all competitions.

Xavi Simons takes Tottenham number seven shirt

Simons is to take the number seven shirt at Tottenham, a number previously worn by former captain and club legend Heung-min Son, who departed earlier this summer for LAFC.

It is a number that Simons has already carried in his career, first at PSV Eindhoven, then with the Dutch national team, and now he has returned to it once again in N17.

Speaking on his decision, Simons told Tottenham’s official media channels: “The year of PSV, it was the number that I had. I had a really good season as well. In the national team I am wearing the number seven as well. So for me this was the best option for me.

“He [Son] made his own story with this number, I think he deserved it as well. The way people treat him in the club, but not only in the club but the fans as well, they love him.

“Everyone loves Son and hopefully I can make my own story with it. I know it is a big responsibility, I am ready to take it. So ready to make my own story.”

Tottenham debut on the horizon for Xavi Simons

Simons will now be hoping to settle quickly into life at N17 before making his first appearance for Tottenham.

Following the Bournemouth clash, Tottenham will have a two-week international break, which should provide the Netherlands international with valuable time to adapt both on and off the pitch.

That means his debut could realistically come after the break, with Tottenham set to face West Ham United at the London Stadium in what promises to be a fierce London derby.
