Tottenham star Xavi Simons helped Thomas Frank's men move into the Champions League top eight as they defeated Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund

Tottenham star Xavi Simons has shared a picture of his bruised foot following Tuesday night's Champions League victory over Borussia Dortmund.

The 22-year-old was at his best for Spurs at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as the pressure eased on Thomas Frank. The Dane received the backing of the board after the 2-1 loss to West Ham over the weekend, despite the club sitting 14th in the Premier League.

Cristian Romero opened the scoring after a positive start from Spurs before Dominic Solanke scored for the first time since his return from injury. Dortmund were forced to play the majority of the clash with ten men after Daniel Svensson was given a red card in the 24th minute.

Simons, who has struggled for consistency since his summer move from RB Leipzig, was instrumental in the win. The Netherlands international played in central attacking midfield and was involved in most of Spurs' play.

"Xavi Simons has been absolutely terrific," Ally McCoist said during TNT Sports' coverage of the game. "Sometimes you look at players and you can see they're really enjoying themselves. That's what's happening with Simons."

Despite one of his better performances for Spurs, several tackles left him on the floor and, post-match, Simons shared the impact of the challenges. Posting on Instagram, he wrote: "I failed more times than you tried," alongside a number of images from the game.

One of them included a photo of his left foot, which was severely bruised. Fortunately, the former PSG star didn't seem to be in too much pain, and he played the entirety of the win.

After the game, Frank was asked about the creativity in his team from Simons and the rest of the attack. "I think they did very well," he said.

"So we played that, how can you say? It was a little bit of a 3-4-3, both to match it up, but also to do it a little bit, taking care of it. And Djed, I think, did exceptionally well, especially first half.

"Xavi produced a lot of good moments and found good positions, and I think Wilson was electric at times. So I'm happy with that."

He added: "I said it from the beginning, the players are giving everything. I think that's an extremely good sign about the culture. Extremely good sign that they want to do everything. That they are together, that we are together. Very impressive and we were a little bit down to the bare bones with the available players.

"And the way Destiny, he was definitely one of the ones I was talking about yesterday. We were constantly talking about, should we swap him in or not? But he was sometimes bombarding forward. I was thinking 'Oh no, Dest, please, come on, calm now. Be a little bit clever.'

"But very nice. Dom is the one that is normally a physical beast, but he's been out for so long. It means something. He gave everything, and I think he gave so much to the team."
