A first since the Ancelotti era: All the key stats from Como vs. AC Milan

AC Milan overcame early adversity against Como to come from behind and record a huge three points on Thursday night.

Marc-Oliver Kempf scored for the home side in the 10th minute, but Massimiliano Allegri’s men responded well. Christopher Nkunku equalised with a penalty just before the break that Adrien Rabiot won, then Rabiot turned scorer as he netted a second-half brace in an eventual 3-1 win.

Against the run of play

Cesc Fabregas was keen to point out after the game how dominant his side were in terms of the balance of play, and he has a point. They had 68% of the ball, a higher Expected Goals number, over double the total shots, twice the amount of shots on target and double the corners.

Of course what matters is what you do with the ball and how many times you manage to find the net. The fact that the ‘big chances’ metric shows 2-2 suggests that it really could have gone either way in actual fact, though Mike Maignan’s heroics tell a different story.

Milan (12W, 7D, 1L) have recorded at most one defeat in the first 20 Serie A matches of the season only for the third time in the three-point era (since 1994-95), after 1995-96 (12W, 7D, 1L) and 2003/04 (16W, 3D, 1L) – in both cases, the Rossoneri went on to win the Scudetto at the end of the season.

La Marseilles and other milestones

Adrien Rabiot scored a brace away from home for the first time in his career in the ‘top five’ European leagues. In general, the French midfielder hadn’t scored more than one goal in Serie A since his brace in Juventus-Sampdoria on March 12, 2023.

Maignan achieved his 100th victory with Milan across all competitions: 80 of these came in Serie A, nine in the Champions League, three in the Europa League, six in the Coppa Italia, and two in the Supercoppa Italiana

Christopher Nkunku (4G+1A) has been involved in a goal for four consecutive appearances in a single league for the first time since the period between October and November 2022: five goals in four consecutive Bundesliga matches with Leipzig.

Thanks to his seven goals and two assists, Rafael Leão has earned Milan 14 points in this current league season, at least three more than any other player.

Matteo Gabbia has reached the milestone of 100 Serie A appearances with Milan: since his debut in the tournament with the Rossoneri (2018-19), he is only the second Italian to achieve this goal, after Davide Calabria (144 appearances in the period).
