AC Milan Women 2-1 Juventus: Rossonere leapfrog champions with Dompig’s winner

AC Milan Women secured a huge three points on Saturday afternoon as they beat the Scudetto holders Juventus.

Mlan bounced back with a very important win against Lazio one week ago, following two defeats against Roma and Fiorentina where they coughed up a lead. Van Dooren scored twice in the opening 18 minutes, then Renzotti made it 3-1 and finally Ijeh made it 4-2 inside the final quarter of an hour.

Thus, Saturday’s match against Juventus was a real litmus test of where Suzanne Bakker’s side are at, as they faced the reigning champions Juventus. The table is so tight though that they knew they would overtake the Bianconere with a win.

Things started very well for the Rossoneri as Evelyn Ijeh scored in the 20th minute. It was a goal like that of a true striker: a beautiful cross from the right by Renzotti, and in the six-yard box a volley from the Swede through a crowd sent De Jong the wrong way.

Right on the stroke of half-time, Juventus equalised through Girelli. She received a teasing ball from the righ side in the six-yard box and with Milan’s defence stood static, the Italian striker was able to fire home.

The second half began with Bakker’s crucial substitution. Renzotti was struggling with injury and made way for Dompig, then up until the hour mark they had to dig deep to defend against a siege from the Bianconere.

Then, suddenly, the winning goal arrived in the 65th minute. Dompig showed her experience in the penalty area and, following a series of rebounds, was in the right place at the right time to fire a loose ball into the top corner of the far post. The goal was up given a VAR check.

Juventus were then well on top in the final 20 minutes as they went in pursuit of an equaliser, but it never came as Milan held firm for three points. Bakker’s side are now third in the league, with nine points from five games.
