AD FEATURE: Man City Champions League round of 16 preview - odds, prediction and route to the final

1 week ago 38

Manchester City find themselves in the familiar territory of a heavyweight clash with Real Madrid in the last 16 of the Champions League

Despite some labeling them as 'dark horses' this year, with Arsenal currently the 5/2 tournament favourites with bet365, the historical significance of this tie cannot be understated.

Everything appears to be aligning for a City side that has already conquered the Bernabéu once this season, and they head into the first leg on March 11 as 23/20 favourites to take a lead back to Manchester.

Real Madrid, currently priced at 12/1 to lift the trophy, enter a period of uncertainty following the recent departure of their manager, yet their European pedigree remains the ultimate test.

Here's everything you need to know about the Champions League knock-out stages for Man City in 2026:

The view from Reach PLC's chief Man City reporter, Simon Bajkowski

Manchester City should have a very good chance of progressing in their Round of 16 tie against Real Madrid. Everything seems to be coming together for a City side that have already proven their credentials by winning at the Bernabéu earlier this season.

In contrast, Real Madrid look average at present, even following the decision to sack their manager, and they continue to be hampered by ongoing injury issues.

However, despite those advantages, it is important to remember that this remains a relatively inexperienced City team in certain areas. Facing Real Madrid in the Champions League is never straightforward, and their history in this competition ensures that this won’t be an easy task for Pep Guardiola’s men.

From a tactical perspective, Vinícius Júnior remains the primary concern as a player who has hurt City in previous meetings. If Kylian Mbappé is ruled out through injury, even more of the attacking burden will hang on Vinícius’ shoulders, making him the clear danger man to nullify.

On the flip side, City’s own strength lies in their control of the middle of the park. If they can field Bernardo Silva and Rodri together in their midfield for both legs, their hopes of progressing will shoot up significantly.

Looking at the wider picture, Arsenal appear to be the safest bet among the English clubs this year, which leaves City in the interesting position of being the competition’s 'dark horse.'

While a quarter-final spot is the baseline expectation, City remain a team that the rest of the field will want to avoid. Arsenal and Bayern Munich topped the first phase and currently look like the strongest two teams in the tournament, but they will certainly be wary of both City and the holders, PSG, as the knockout stages begin to unfold.
