Joe Gomez has yet to score a goal in his professional career, and soccer legend Alan Shearer was heard laughing after the Liverpool defender attempted to score from 25 yards against Paris Saint-Germain.
Liverpool was eliminated from the Champions League on Tuesday night, after failing to score against PSG across both legs. A spirited effort by Liverpool was overshadowed by Hugo Ekitike's injury, and Ousmane Dembele scored a late brace to secure a 2-0 win for PSG at Anfield.
The hosts had several chances to score, and Virgil van Dijk was denied by a stunning goalline clearance by Marquinhos. Gomez also attempted to score his first goal during the game, but Shearer was heard laughing as his effort deflected off a PSG defender.

He has remained at Liverpool ever since and is approaching 300 career games without scoring a single goal. The defender had an audacious effort against PSG, and commentator Jon Champion said on the Amazon broadcast: "Here is Gomez, lining one up."
Shearer replied, laughing: "It'll happen one day, won't it?"
Champion then added: "I'm not sure it will, he's nearly 30!"
Shearer was then heard laughing in the background, but Gomez has commented on his infamous goal drought before.

During the 2023/24 season, the final campaign under former head coach Jurgen Klopp, Gomez spoke on the We are Liverpool podcast and addressed his career drought. Fans, players, and coaches are desperate for the moment to occur, but Gomez accepts responsibility.
"It starts with me, doesn't it? I have to believe," Gomez said. "I'm never really up for corners, so obviously that plays a role. I'd have a little bit more of a chance, maybe.
"But it's weird because in eight years it's never been that apparent and now suddenly... Even the gaffer gave me a bit, he said he'd give my wife some money if I scored – it's worth giving it a go!"
Gomez was also asked how he'd react if he finally scored a goal, but the Liverpool defender wasn't sure. "A little bit. I don't really know.
"It's almost comical now. I almost have to play on it a bit. I don't know how I can live up to the goal! Even the lads are giving me a bit of stick.
"In the school team, you couldn't stop me. I was up front literally, and then you just get pushed back. But that was sort of the outlet – no pressure, just playing for the school.
"I did get a few hat-tricks for the school team, that's for sure, but after that... I score in training, I get some in training, but it's just not come yet."
