Alan Shearer makes bleak Liverpool prediction as 'title race is done'

1 hour ago 1

Alan Shearer has delivered a damning verdict on Liverpool's Premier League title chances, suggesting that the Reds "won't win anything" unless they can arrest their current slump in form.

Liverpool started the season in blistering fashion, winning five consecutive matches to establish an early lead at the top of the table. However, since a defeat to Crystal Palace in late September, the team's form has nosedived dramatically.

Manager Arne Slot has watched his players lose seven of their last 10 matches in all competitions, including five of their last six in the Premier League. This poor run of results has seen them slip down the table, with Arsenal now seven points clear at the top and Manchester City also ahead of them.

The Reds were comprehensively beaten 3-0 by Pep Guardiola's City side at the Etihad on Sunday, a result which served as a harsh reality check for the Merseyside club.

Shearer believes that unless there is a significant improvement, Liverpool could end the season without any silverware.

He told Betfair: "If Liverpool continue to play like they did against Manchester City, then they won't win anything. They'll get dumped out of whatever competitions they're in.

"They've got the FA Cup and the Champions League, but I do think the league's gone for them now they've lost five games.

"I don't see them being in a title race now. I think they would have to probably win every single game between now and the end of the season. I don't think that's possible.

"So, I think their title race is done. It's the Champions League or the FA Cup for Liverpool, but they won't be winning any of those unless they improve anyway."

The Reds started the campaign as reigning champions following a summer transfer window which saw them splash out more than $500 million, including two signings that smashed the British transfer record.

Yet the team has struggled to gel, with a number of the marquee signings failing to deliver the expected performances.

Prior to facing City, Liverpool had secured victories against Aston Villa before following that up with an impressive Champions League triumph over Real Madrid days later. Shearer believed those results could prove to be the catalyst that sparked the Reds' stuttering season back into life.

Yet they failed to capitalize on that momentum, with many of the same recurring issues evident once more. "It was a bit of a surprise because I thought the Real Madrid game might have been a turning point for them," said Shearer.

"It might have been a sign for them to say, 'Let's go, let's do this, let's kick on for the rest of the season.' But it actually went back to what it was a couple of weeks earlier. They were really flat; they were really poor defensively."
