Alan Shearer makes 'stop the rot' Liverpool prediction for Brentford game

1 week ago 49

Alan Shearer has backed Liverpool to end its Premier League losing streak - although the former Newcastle and England striker has warned the Reds their title defense could be over if they fall to another defeat at Brentford.

Arne Slot’s players make the trip to London on Saturday as they look for a first league win in four games, having brought its run of four consecutive losses to an end against Eintracht Frankfurt earlier this week.

The Reds have ground to make up now as they turn their attention back to domestic matters, having fallen four points behind leaders Arsenal after defeats to Crystal Palace, Chelsea, and Manchester United.

With Mikel Arteta’s side facing Palace on Sunday, Liverpool will have the chance to narrow the gap to a point at least for a few hours, and although he believes Slot still has some issues to iron out, Shearer is expecting the Reds to rediscover their league form.

“Liverpool need to stop the rot - the pressure’s on them hugely,” Shearer told Betfair.

“They cannot have another defeat in the league, or their title push might be over. I know that would be early to say that, but that's what it could come down to if they were to be beaten again.

“I would expect them to pick up and to be hurting from last weekend's criticism, as well as because of what they did in the Champions League - looking something near to their best, probably their best performance of the season.

“Whether [Alexander] Isak's fit and whether he's got decisions to make with regards to Mo Salah or not, we'll have to wait and see.

“I would think Liverpool going there after this week, I think they might actually take the points - as tough as it may be.”

Slot will have a decision to make on Isak, with the striker a doubt for tomorrow’s game after picking up a groin injury during Wednesday’s win in Frankfurt.

The 26-year-old played alongside fellow frontman Hugo Ekitike in Germany, with the French international scoring his sixth goal since his summer move as he made a strong claim to keep his place against Brentford.

Ryan Gravenberch is another doubt for Saturday after the midfielder twisted his ankle against United last weekend.

Meanwhile, Jeremie Frimpong is out after being forced off with a hamstring problem in Frankfurt, while goalkeeper Alisson Becker remains on the sidelines, with Slot confirming the Brazilian will be out for a little while longer.
