Alasdair Gold suggests five reasons behind Tottenham’s lack of signings

Alasdair Gold has now provided some potential reasons for Tottenham’s lack of urgency in this transfer window, with some being the club’s fault and others dictated by the circumstances they find themselves in.

We are now nearly halfway into the transfer window and so far, Mathys Tel is the only player that the Lilywhites have acquired.

Another signing is soon expected to be made official, with Japanese defender Kota Takai set to arrive at Spurs in a £5m deal from J-League side Kawasaki Frontale.

Earlier this week, The Times suggested that Thomas Frank is keen to meet the Tottenham players before deciding on their futures, which might be the reason for the club’s lack of urgency this summer.

Alasdair Gold says Tottenham’s wage structure and lack of investment could be behind delay

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has now backed up the claim that Frank wants time to assess the Tottenham squad he inherited before deciding on which position he wants to strengthen.

He also points out that Spurs have cash-flow problems and have not been successful in attracting outside investment yet. As a result, the club may be waiting for ENIC to pump money in before making some ambitious signings this summer.

The journalist also suggests that Tottenham’s tight wage structure might be making it very difficult for them to compete for the kind of players they want to sign, particularly given the salaries that some of their rivals are willing to offer these players.

Uncertainty on Heung-min Son and Cristian Romero may be playing a part

The rumours linking Cristian Romero with a move to Atletico Madrid show no signs of slowing down, with the La Liga club pushing to land the Tottenham defender.

Additionally, Heung-min Son’s future at Tottenham appears to be in doubt, although it has been claimed over recent days that Son wants to stay at Spurs this summer.

Gold claims that without knowing the fate of Romero and Son, the club may be unsure of who their top targets should be this summer.

Finally, the Football.London journalist also points to Tottenham’s shortage of homegrown and club-trained players as an issue that may be constraining who they can pursue.
