Demetrio Albertini has become the latest to speak out about Rafael Leao, stating that he cannot be used as a conventional striker.
Albertini is someone who knows what it takes to win, and to do so at Milan. During his career with the Rossoneri, he won five Serie A titles and two Champions League titles with the club. He also played for Atletico Madrid, Lazio and Barcelona.
One of the big doubt surrounding his former club is where Leao fits into things. He came off the bench in each of the last two games after recovering from a calf issue, but he missed a couple of big chances that would have won the game, so there are questions about if he can be the striker.
Albertini spoke during an interview with Tuttosport in which he gave his thoughts on Leao, Luka Modric and other matters at Milan. His comments were relayed by Radio Rossonera.
Can Leao be Milan’s number nine?
“Rafa is definitely not a penalty area striker, he can’t even play as a midfielder. He’s a long-striding, counter-attacking forward. He can certainly be a valid alternative, but it will depend on how he adapts to the role.
“Max has managed many champions, he’s always been at the top in Italy. He has great experience and will find the key to getting Leao to perform at his best.”

Is there a problem in the attack?
“They are missing a player who can reach double figures, who can score 20 league goals. You win the Scudetto if you have a striker who can score, but if Gimenez or Pulisic score, that’s fine too. This Milan team objectively lacks a striker who can score those goals.”
Luka Modric is looking good…
“Beautiful, beautiful to watch. Beautiful to see how a great champion like him also has that desire to challenge himself, run and win a match. He’s always been a great professional, a player that AC Milan has been missing for several years.
“He reminds me of Andrea Pirlo. The ball always goes to him and with his intelligence he always manages to dictate the right pass. Luka makes the team move in his own image and likeness.”
