Alexander Isak gives one-word response after scoring first Liverpool goal vs Southampton

1 hour ago 29

Alexander Isak described the moment he scored his first goal for Liverpool as “amazing” after his strike in the Reds’ 2-1 Carabao Cup win over Southampton.

The deadline day signing was handed just his second start for his new club on Tuesday as he continued to build up his minutes, having made his debut last week in the Champions League, and he marked the occasion in style.

Isak gave Liverpool the lead in the tie just before half-time with a composed finish after Federico Chiesa pounced on a misplaced pass from Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy, with fans hoping it will be the first of many after his record $169 million move from Newcastle.

Liverpool would go on to secure its place in the fourth round thanks to Hugo Ekitike’s late winner, although the Frenchman would immediately be sent off after being shown a second yellow card for his celebrations.

Nevertheless, it will be a night that Isak will remember for all the right reasons, with the 25-year-old getting his Liverpool tally off the mark.

Asked for his immediate reaction by ITV Sport after the game, Isak responded: “Amazing.

“It was good to get back out there and score my first goal here at Anfield, and the win as well, so it’s a good night.”

Asked whether he was relieved after missing a chance during the opening stages of the game, Isak replied: “Yeah of course, I should have scored that one as well, but that’s a part of being a striker, you miss some and you score some.

“I think the most important thing is to shake it off and be ready for the next one.

“I just tried to play my game and not think too much. I feel confident in myself that things will work out, and that when I get my chances, I’ll put them away. That’s my mindset, and I’m happy I put one away today.”

Isak looks as though he may get another chance to start on Saturday against Crystal Palace now, with Ekitike’s red card meaning he will be suspended for the trip to Selhurst Park.

Arne Slot took Isak off at half-time as he continues to manage his new striker’s minutes closely, although the Swedish international isn’t too concerned about being overworked.

“I feel good. Every game I play, it’s very helpful and it gets me in better shape, so hopefully I’m getting more and more ready,” Isak added.

“It’s difficult to say. I think it’s a mixture of fitness-wise and also football-wise, but I feel good, I feel like I’m in shape to at least make a difference.”
