Alexander Isak returns, 3 players missing - what we spotted in Liverpool training before Man City

4 hours ago 20

Liverpool will take on Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday with Arne Slot's side hoping to repeat the result that it earned in February, when goals from Mohamed Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai earned a 2-0 victory.

This time, the Reds are playing catch-up in the league table, with Arsenal taking on Sunderland on Saturday. The Gunners could be 10 points ahead by the time the match kicks off.

For that reason, both Slot and Pep Guardiola's side really could do with getting the three points here. Almost any result can be argued as a positive one for Arsenal, who will be watching on.

Ahead of the game, Alexander Isak has returned to training. Here is what else Liverpool.com spotted as Slot and his coaching staff continued preparations for the game in Kirkby.

Alexander Isak returns

Having been absent lately because of injury, Isak was back in training here, as expected. Slot had already confirmed as much in his press conference earlier in the day.

Isak has been sidelined with a groin problem but could now be back in contention. He won't start at the Etihad Stadium but it would be a big boost to have him available as an option off the bench.

All smiles after Real Madrid

Fresh from beating Aston Villa and Real Madrid, the Liverpool players looked in a good mood, as you might imagine, as they conducted their various drills.

Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz were among those with beaming smiles and they should both retain their places in the starting XI for the weekend. Both were excellent midweek.

Alexis Mac Allister has looked much more like his usual self lately and he could be seen having a joke with Salah. Curtis Jones, meanwhile, who was strangely left out of the England squad earlier in the day, was also in good spirits.

Three players missing

There were no unexpected absences here, with Alisson Becker, Jeremie Frimpong and Giovanni Leoni the only ones sidelined at the moment. Alisson, Slot said earlier, should be back after the international break.

While the Brazilian will be able to feature against Nottingham Forest, Frimpong is set to take a little longer, and Leoni is currently undergoing recovery for an ACL injury, so will miss the majority of the rest of the season.

Slot has basically the same potential starters to pick from as he had against Real Madrid. Given how good that performance was, there won't be many or maybe even any — changes.
