Alexander Isak to Liverpool transfer latest as Swedish striker issues statement

21 hours ago 41

The Alexander Isak transfer saga at Newcastle took a dramatic turn when the Sweden striker broke his silence on the situation.

Meanwhile, Liverpool, an admirer of the Swedish forward, has already had an opening bid rejected by the club, with Arne Slot addressing the situation on Thursday. The Tyneside outfit has made it abundantly clear that Isak, who still has three years remaining on his deal, is not available for transfer.

However, this has not prevented him from agitating for a departure this transfer window, alleging that promises "were broken." Despite the continuing turmoil surrounding this summer's main story and Liverpool's initial offer being turned down, the Reds remain connected with a potential swoop before the September 1 deadline.

With that in mind, here are the latest developments on the saga...

Isak's explosive declaration

Isak published his statement on Tuesday after failing to attend the Professional Footballers' Association's awards ceremony.

"I've kept quiet for a long time while others have spoken," his post on Instagram read. "That silence has allowed people to push their own version of events - even though they know it doesn't reflect what was really said and agreed behind closed doors.

"The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading.

"When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can't continue, that's where things are for me right now - and why change is in the best interests of everyone, not just myself."

Newcastle's official reply

Newcastle issued its own official response. It read: "We are clear, in response, that Alex remains under contract - and that no commitment has ever been made by a club official that Alex can leave Newcastle United this summer.

"We want to keep our best players, but we also understand players have their own wishes and we listen to their views. As explained to Alex and his representatives, we must always take into consideration the best interests of Newcastle United, the team and also our supporters, in all decisions - and we have been clear that the conditions of a sale this summer have not transpired.

"We do not foresee those conditions being met. This is a proud football club with proud traditions and we strive to retain our family feel. Alex remains part of our family and will be welcomed back when he's ready to re-join his teammates."

Exit route blocked?

The Daily Mail suggests that any prospect of Isak securing a departure from St. James' Park has been significantly diminished following his statement.

It's also been reported that the Magpies will shut the door on his departure after his public declaration prompted a negative reaction from figures in the north east. The situation surrounding the revered Premier League talisman has now taken a distinctly bitter turn.

Coincidentally, Newcastle's first home fixture of the campaign is against Liverpool on Monday.

Joelinton makes his feelings clear

Following Isak's statement, a Newcastle supporter group called 'Wor Flags' posted on Instagram.

The caption appeared to target Isak directly, stating: "Idolised and adored. No promises broken by the fans that make this club. We deserve better than the destructive path you've chosen. Newcastle United will never be defeated."

Newcastle midfielder Joelinton liked the post - while fans voiced their frustration with the striker - though others commended the club's management of the situation thus far.
