Allegri and Gasperini’s mentor Galeone passes away aged 84 on day of Milan-Roma

The world of Italian football is in mourning after the news that Giovanni Galeone has passed away at the age of 84.

The former player and coach of Pescara and Napoli, among many others, finally lost a long and brave battle with illness. His impact on the world of calcio is something that perhaps does not get spoken about enough.

A longtime football obsessive, Galeone was the teacher and mentor of Allegri and Gasperini, who will face off this evening in a crucial game betwen Milan and Roma at San Siro. It is a six-pointer in the standings, but there is extra meaning because of these unfortunate and sad circumstances.

Back in March, Galeone was actually one of the first to mention the idea of Allegri ending up back at Milan. In the end as we know he did return, and Max will want to do his former teacher proud this evening in front of over 70,000 fans at San Siro.

Galeone’s most recent role had been with Udinese in the 2006-07 season for a second spell, but he only officially announced his retirement in 2013. Pescara, Como, Perugia and Napoli are among his other former clubs.
