Massimiliano Allegri has shed some light on how his return to AC Milan came about, revealing how quickly the decision was made.
In a feature on the day of his official announcement we explained how Allegri’s return materialised, and it was thanks to a blitz by the new sporting director Igli Tare. The decision to change head coach had already been made but the acceleration for the Italian was ultimately a rapid one.
Allegri spoke in front of reporters at his unveiling press conference at Casa Milan on Monday afternoon, and naturally he was questioned on why he was convinced to try a second stint at Milan 11 years after his first one ended.
“First of all because Milan is a club I am very fond of. When I received the phone call from Tare and Furlani I met them straight away. I was very enthusiastic and in an hour we decided that we would start this adventure together. I am very happy with this choice I made,” he said.
On Scudetto aspirations, he said: “I can only say that when you work at Milan you all have to have the ambition to get the best results: you have to start working with the conviction of getting the best results. If in March we are good at being in the top positions then we will go for big things.
“Now it is useless to say that we will win the league: you have to be responsible and concrete, getting results through passion, work and the responsibility that each of us within this club must have.”
Now, Allegri can get to work. Players began arriving on Friday for the official start of preseason on Monday, with 28 squad members called up. There was a behind closed doors training session this morning, with an open one for supporters at 18:00 CEST.
