Allegri explains ‘lesson’ from Genoa draw: “In the end it was absolutely useless”

Massimiliano Allegri believes that AC Milan didn’t manage certain passages of the game right in their draw against Genoa.

Milan came into the match against Genoa knowing that they needed to win to keep pace with Inter in the title charge, but they were held to a 1-1 draw in a game where there was an awful lot going on in both halves.

Naturally it was the Rossoneri loanee Lorenzo Colombo who opened the scoring against his parent club in the first half. Milan bombarded the Genoa box for the rest of the game, ending with over 30 shots, but in the end the equaliser came in the 92nd minute through Rafael Leao.

There was yet more carnage though as the away side had a chance to win it a few minutes later with Davide Bartesaghi penalised for a foul inside his own box. Stanciu took on the responsibility, yet he blazed it over the bar.

Milan 1-1 Genoa: Allegri’s reaction

Allegri spoke to DAZN after the full-time whistle to try and pick apart what was an encounter full of drama at San Siro but with the points shared. MilanNews relayed what he had to say.

Is this one of those points that make the difference at the end of the season, or perhaps Milan is picking up less?

“In football, you get what the result gives you. You have to look at the positives, despite a difficult first half. They ran, man-marking Modric, we had two or three favourable opportunities to score. Then we conceded.

“In the second half, it was a different story: we increased the intensity, they dropped a bit deeper. These are the things we need to mature on. In the course of a season, there are these kinds of games where, by the 91st minute, you have four minutes to play for the win against a team that is in great psychological difficulty at that point.

“You need to create a couple of dangerous situations by bringing the ball close to the penalty area, without exposing yourself to a counter-attack that put us in danger of losing. It’s a lesson in maturity we need to learn. To finish in the top four, points are very important.

“You can’t expect one game to solve a problem, unless it’s the last. We need to improve our mental clarity in bringing the ball close to the goal. In the last two games, we’ve been very good at being balanced, but tonight we lacked patience after 1-0. We became too hasty, and haste gets you nowhere.”

Were the team poor at sensing the danger for their goal?

“Colombo did well there, but Gabbia also slipped in that situation. We were in too much of a rush; games last 100 minutes. If you don’t score, you shouldn’t concede, and once you don’t concede, the others gradually decline. You need a bit of patience.”

What kind of period is this for Milan?

“It’s an important moment, a difficult moment. They’re all important games, you have to approach them calmly. It’s disappointing not to have won today at home. The team shot a lot, created a lot, but in the end it was absolutely useless.

“In fact, we were lucky in the end because they missed the penalty. Now we’ll prepare for Fiorentina, it will be a very difficult match. We have more or less everyone available, so we’ll see if we can make the right choices.”

What’s wrong with Leao? How can he grow?

“He had two or three situations in open play where he could have done better, but he’s not in great shape. Tonight he was as decisive as in the other games, and in the end he scored the equaliser.”
