Allegri gets longed-for headache at Milan: healthy competition finally emerges

1 week ago 49

There have been a lot of complaints about AC Milan’s squad depth this season, rightfully so, but the situation has vastly improved in the last few weeks. Indeed, it’s now almost a headache for Massimiliano Allegri.

For most of the first half of the season, the squad depth was the main topic among Milan fans. Between injuries, suspensions and deputies not cutting it, the Rossoneri definitely didn’t perform as well as they could have done on the pitch.

Yet, they managed to ride out the worst storms and now have 46 points after 21 games, only losing one game as well (the opening round). In addition to just riding out the storm, it would be fair to say that there is actually healthy competition now.

A headache you want

Lorenzo and Stefano discussed this exact topic in the last Pub Chat, taking a look at how some of the deputies have grown in recent weeks. The likes of Koni De Winter and Samuele Ricci spring to mind, but you could easily mention Christopher Nkunku and Zachary Athekame too.

The development of these players has certainly helped Milan take a step back on the mercato, shifting focus to last-minute opportunities instead of expensive January signings. Beyond the mercato, however, it has also helped Allegri massively.

Before, he was more or less forced to make certain decisions in each department, which limited his ability to change Milan based on the opponent. Now, however, the situation is the complete opposite with four strong centre-backs, three central midfield deputies and four forwards.

You could definitely argue that another centre-back should be added still, but Milan are in a very good place with the rest of the positions. Again, this is somewhat of a headache for Allegri as it’s always hard to bench a player in form, but it’s brilliant for the gaffer and Milan in the long run.

As reported by Gazzetta dello Sport just this morning, there are eight players (!) battling out for a starting spot tomorrow: Tomori-De Winter 60-40%, Ricci-Fofana 60-40%, Saelemaekers-Athekame 60-40%, Pulisic-Nkunku 60-40%.

This is simply fantastic and with the schedule becoming a lot less busy, one can only hope that the players will be able to stay fit too.
