Allegri highlights where Milan must improve and comments on Maignan renewal

AC Milan head coach Massimiliano Allegri is not predicting an easy game against Hellas Verona, while he also commented on Mike Maignan’s future.

Milan are looking to sign off the year with three points to keep pace with the others at the top of the Serie A table. However, in their last league outing they were held to a 2-2 draw by Sassuolo, and a few days later lost 2-0 to Napoli in the Supercoppa Italiana.

This has taken a bit of the wind out of the Rossoneri’s sails, as has the absence of Rafael Leao who again will not be present as he continues to feel discomfort while running. Luka Modric and Davide Bartesaghi are back in the side though, after being rested in Riyadh.

Allegri spoke to DAZN not long before kick-off at San Siro and he answered questions on a range of topics, from today’s game to the window which opens next month. MilanNews relayed his words.

The team’s approach will be important…

“It’s definitely not an easy match. Verona is a team with great pace and good technique up front. We need to play a very organised game to maintain our composure throughout the match.”

Do the players play against big teams with a bit more humility?

“I think we absolutely need to improve. There’s data showing that in matches where we’ve had much more possession, we’ve produced fewer results. This means we need to be much more careful and pay more attention to the goals we concede in those moments.”

Nkunku starts again…

“He’s been a centre-forward, he’s scored goals. He’s settling in with us. As I’ve said many times, there are players who fit right in and players who need time. But he’s a player with extraordinary technique. Let’s hope he does well today and, above all, that he scores goals.”

How important is Maignan as a leader?

“Maignan is as important as the experienced players. To keep Milan at a certain level, the club is working towards the future. There will certainly be contract renewals for some key players, and I think that’s normal: the club is working towards that.”
