AC Milan triumphed in the Derby della Madonnina thanks to a decisive goal by Christian Pulisic and a Mike Maignan penalty save.
Pulisic netted in the 54th minute when Alexis Saelemaekers had a shot saved by Yann Sommer straight into his path. Then, Maignan was the hero between the posts again just as he was against Roma, saving a penalty this time from Hakan Calhanoglu.
It is three crucial points that not only secure the bragging rights but also ensure that Milan moved to second place in the standings, above their city rivals.
A sea of blue
Who says that you need possession? Or more shots? Or more corners? Or more big chances? Milan’s win – looking purely at the main stats from the game – appears about as smash-and-grab as they come.
However, it must be noted that a large part of Inter’s Expected Goals comes from the penalty that wasn’t scored. The Rossoneri were also happy to let their hosts have the ball, though having one-third of the shots and half of the shots on target meant it was a tough watch at times.
One thing that will please Massimiliano Allegri is that his team – who prepared during the week to face set-pieces – did not concede a goal from the nine corners. Acerbi came close though, striking the post with a header.
Derby streak
Milan are unbeaten in six consecutive derbies against Inter across all competitions (4W, 2D) for the first time since the period between November 2002 and April 2005 (10 in that case).
The Rossoneri kept a clean sheet in a Serie A match against Inter for the first time since April 4, 2018, ending a streak of 14 consecutive matches with at least one goal conceded.
Landmarks
Massimiliano Allegri has become the seventh coach to register 100 victories in all competitions with AC Milan, following Carlo Ancelotti, Nereo Rocco, Fabio Capello, Stefano Pioli, Nils Liedholm, and Arrigo Sacchi.
It was a 100th appearance for Matteo Gabbia in the top five European leagues, while Mike Maignan recorded his 150th victory in the top five European leagues.
Maignan has saved three of the last six penalties faced in Serie A, after saving only one of the previous 12 penalties in the competition.
Old and young
At 40 years and 75 days, Luka Modrić became the fifth outfield player to play in a derby between Milan and Inter in Serie A after turning 40, following Ibrahimović (41 years, 166 days), Costacurta (41 years, 25 days), Maldini (40 years, 339 days), and Zanetti (40 years, 281 days).
Before Davide Bartesaghi (19 years, 329 days), the last outfield player to start in a derby between Milan and Inter in Serie A before turning 20 was Manuel Locatelli in 2016 (18 years, 317 days).
