Allegri praises key aspects of Bologna win but claims Milan ‘could have done even better’

Massimiliano Allegri admitted that even he was very satisfied with how his AC Milan side played in their comfortable win over Bologna, but there were aspects to improve.

Milan piled more misery on to a Bologna side that have won one of their last 11 league games by winning 3-0 at the Stadio Renato dall’Ara on Tuesday night, with three different goal scorers too.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek fired in the first goal from Adrien Rabiot’s feed, then Christopher Nkunku buried a penalty that he won for a run in behind and contact from the goalkeeper.

Rabiot then pounced upon a wild throw-in from Juan Miranda to score himself early in the secnd half, and the Rossoneri even missed other chances, but ultimately go seven points clear of fifth place.

‘We could have done even better’

Allegri spoke to DAZN after the final whistle to share his thoughts on a very positive night of work, and MilanNews relayed what he had to say.

The forwards had a great game today. What were the keys?

“They’re top-quality players. It was a game we had to play seriously, they were very tight at the back. Another away game against a dangerous Bologna side. The lads played very well in both phases.”

How pleased were you with the attacking play in general?

“Tonight was a good match, but I think we could have done even better. We need to work on these ball-handling situations. More than ball-handling, we need to work on precise and decisive plays.

“Tonight we played better and better because Loftus-Cheek and Nkunku did well up front. We found outlets both in depth and on the ball.”

Is this the foundation you want to see from Milan?

“It was a good performance, it was important to get to 50 points. Our goal, I repeat, is to stay in the top four, and it will be difficult because we still have a long way to go. At 3-0, the boys stayed in the game as a team and defended well: not conceding is always a good thing.”

Is it more important to be seven points ahead of Roma or to be five points behind Inter?

“It’s more important to look back because the season is still long, and there are a lot of points to gain to get back into the Champions League. We need to take one small step at a time.

“Let’s enjoy this break, because we don’t play on Sunday, so we need to recharge our batteries, but above all, players like Leao and Pulisic will help us. It would be nice to have all the players available for the return match, next Friday against Pisa.”

At the end we could see you really didn’t want to concede a goal…

“It was important. We have young players, with only a few games to play, and they’re getting a bit carried away by the excitement. Pavlovic was wandering around the pitch a bit, but in those situations, you carry the ball, you risk getting hurt, losing tackles…

“In those moments, you just have to manage the ball in the opponent’s half if possible. Those who came on did very well, in the end Jashari, Fullkrug, Ricci, Estupinan, Tomori…

“We have to be happy, but then, from Sunday, when we resume, we have to focus on Pisa and the final push in the season.”

Can Milan take advantage of the fact that they play less than their rivals?

“I’ve always been asked this question. I’d like to play a lot of games, but unfortunately we can’t play them this year. We’ll try to make the most of the time we have to prepare for the matches, aiming for a top-four finish, because next year we have to play in the Champions League.”
