There were a few doubters when AC Milan signed Luka Modric. However, the Croatian is quickly making them quiet.
In football, especially now, things can quickly become overcomplicated for the sake of it. Rather than being at a certain level, there are always deeper things needed, which are trickling into the casual side of the game, too.
Of course, there is a place for this, and it is a needed element of the modern game. However, sometimes the beautiful game can be joyous to watch in its simplest and purest forms.

Simple but superb
That is exactly what Modric is. Of course, he can do the deeper things very well; he wouldn’t have won a Ballon d’Or without it. However, he also does the basic things so well, if not perfectly. His goal this weekend was not massively complicated.
Instead, he was in the right place at the right time. Simple. That point is what Massimo Ambrosini has driven home this morning, and he spoke to Cronache di Spogliatoio, via MilanPress.
“The simplicity with which he plays football, the elegance with which he touches the ball: you see it and it gives you the feeling of being a player who thinks differently than others, or at least who thinks first. Modric has an aura of greatness that accompanies him.
“A great footballer always has humility, and you see it on the pitch because he does even the simplest things, but with the dedication of a player who’s wearing that jersey for the first time. He deeply loves what he does, and he does it with passion, naturalness, and simplicity.
“In that simplicity, you then go and celebrate in the most genuine way possible.”
