Ambrosini weighs in on Maignan renewal situation with Maldini anecdote

Massimo Ambrosini has given his thoughts on the situation regarding Mike Maignan’s future at AC Milan and a potential renewal.

Maignan’s departure from Milan on a free transfer is on the cards at present, given that his deal expires next June and there is nothing to suggest that a renewal is imminent. The management will surely make at least one more attempt to keep him, even if it won’t be easy.

The saves he has made in the last two games to deny Marcus Thuram, Lautaro Martinez, Hakan Calhanoglu and Mario Gila make it difficult to stomach the idea that the Frenchman might only be around for a few more months.

Ambrosini on Maignan and Maldini

Ambrosini was a guest on the Elastici program of Cronache di Spogliatoio (via Calciomercato.com) and he was asked about Matteo Gabbia’s message to the goalkeeper.

How much does Gabbia’s invitation to Maignan to sign matter?

“You know, if you have the slightest doubt and remove the resentment that probably prevented him from signing the contract earlier or accepting the conditions that were offered to him, probably yes.

“We convinced Paolo [Maldini] to sign a couple of times, under different conditions, but I’m sure we gave a big boost to his conviction to carry on. But the discussion was different, the comparison is a bit forced because Paolo was unsure whether to retire or not.

“Our willingness and talking to each other helped him. For Maignan, the discussion isn’t comparable to that. It’s not a question of whether I quit or continue. In my opinion, he wouldn’t go to Inter.”

Does the fact that Gabbia wrote that mean they’re talking about it in the dressing room?

“That’s normal. I’d go there too. I’d go there every day and tell him: ‘Where are you going? Stay here’. Like I wrote to Kaka when he had to leave. You do these things. I’m not saying you beg, but you give advice, you ask for things. I think Maignan has spoken to his team-mates, to those he’s close to.”
