Andy Robertson lifts lid on contract talks in latest headache for Arne Slot

Andy Robertson has revealed that he has not yet begun contract talks with Liverpool over a new deal, but remains relaxed about the situation.

The left-back’s current deal expires at the end of the season, and unless new terms can be agreed, Robertson’s nine-year stint on Merseyside will come to a close next summer. A few weeks ago, with the Scotland captain routinely watching matches from the bench, that seemed a real possibility.

But having recently regained his place in the side, Robertson’s value to the side has become more pronounced. The 31-year-old has started the last four games and has, in the short term at least, ousted Milos Kerkez from the team.

Robertson’s impressive form resulted in Arne Slot being asked during Friday’s press conference whether he could be offered a new contract, a question the Liverpool head coach deflected.

But Robertson, who stopped to speak to reporters after Sunday’s 3-0 defeat against Manchester City, was more willing to provide an update on his current situation.

“I think last season everyone was bored of talking about the three lads, but for me, the relationship between me and the club has been a wonderful one,” said the defender, referring to the sagas surrounding Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, and Trent Alexander-Arnold earlier this year.

“They [Liverpool] have done everything for me and my family. I think I've not been too bad for them in terms of signing from Hull for £8 million and what I've done.

“Whatever happens will happen behind closed doors, and I'm relaxed about the whole situation. If it is my last year, then it's my last year. If it's not, then so be it.”

Robertson had the opportunity to leave Liverpool over the summer when Atletico Madrid expressed an interest in signing the experienced left-back, but he chose to remain at Anfield and compete with Kerkez for a starting berth.

“Obviously, I had a bit of a stressful summer in terms of decisions and things like that,” said Liverpool’s No. 26.

“I've said to myself to just try and enjoy the next few months and then obviously it will start probably taking over my life. I've got no doubt about that. That's what happens when you go into your last six months.

“I'm just trying to focus on football now. Delighted to be back on the pitch, delighted to be back playing the last few games. That's important and let's see what happens. But I'm relaxed about the whole thing and the club has been amazing for me."

Robertson has played 354 times for Liverpool since his 2017 arrival from Hull and established himself as one of the world’s best left-backs in that time. Kerkez’s signing this summer relegated Robertson to a back-up role, something he has not experienced since his first few months as a Liverpool player.

The Reds' vice-captain did not start any of the first nine league matches this season, but has started the last two, and has made 12 appearances in all competitions.
