Andy Robertson asserts that true Scotland fans are proud of their country — and he's assured them the team will be primed for the World Cup.

Following friendly losses to Japan and the Ivory Coast, a section of fans expressed their discontent by jeering Steve Clarke's squad. Boos echoed around the stadium at the conclusion of both matches as Scotland failed to find the back of the net. The second of those games took place at the Hill Dickinson Stadium in Liverpool — Everton's new stadium.

However, after Tuesday's 1-0 defeat to the Ivory Coast, Robertson and his colleagues also received a standing ovation as they exited the pitch.

The captain is convinced that the bulk of the Tartan Army is thrilled with the team's progress, having qualified for three out of the last four major tournaments.

Robertson stated: "At the full-time whistle on Tuesday, I heard a couple of boos, and some people weren't happy. But when we did our lap of honor, the reception we got was magnificent.

"It was Scotland fans happy with what they'd seen. They're happy with their team because we've just qualified for a World Cup — the first time since 1998.

"The people in the stands were proud of the lads and the performance in the second half. Look, we're annoyed at not winning. We want to win every game. But we also want to learn from friendly games."

Clarke's players will jet off to America in June for their first World Cup appearance in 28 years.

The warm-up fixtures against Japan and the Ivory Coast didn't deliver the desired results, but Robertson maintains there were encouraging signs to take forward into the summer.

Clarke had the opportunity to assess several squad players while also experimenting with a different 3-5-2 system against the Ivory Coast.

Despite a section of supporters being left underwhelmed, Robertson remains confident the players will be prepared to deliver when their World Cup opener against Haiti arrives on June 14 in Boston.

The Liverpool left-back said: "Under this manager, we've shown that when it comes to qualifiers, we've stepped up.

"People can argue that in the Euros, we couldn't take the next step by getting out of the group.

"So that's the next step for us, that's what we want to do and work towards in the summer. Those two games will help us do that."
