Andy Robertson reaction sums up mixed Scotland feelings with World Cup dream still alive

2 hours ago 3

Robertson admitted Scotland is pleased to have set up a winner-takes-all clash against Denmark on Tuesday in World Cup qualification, but said the team’s defensive display in the 3-2 defeat to Greece was unacceptable.

The Scots traveled to Piraeus knowing they needed to keep pace with group leaders Denmark and could have taken pole position in the four-team table had they beaten Greece. Instead, Steve Clarke’s side was 3-0 down after 63 minutes.

A remarkable second-half rally saw Scotland nearly come away with a point, after ex-Liverpool man Ben Gannon-Doak scored, and then Robertson’s 70th-minute cross was headed home by Ryan Christie.

Scotland pushed for an equalizer but saw several big chances go begging, with Greece reliant on goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos to preserve its win as the visitors managed eight shots on target.

A chaotic night took another dramatic twist as Denmark slipped up against Belarus. It means the Danes head to Hampden Park on Tuesday for a winner-takes-all clash at the top of Group C.

With Denmark now a point clear of Scotland, the victor in Glasgow will secure a spot at next summer’s World Cup, while the losing side will have to settle for a place in the play-offs.

Therefore, it was mixed emotions for Robertson after the full-time in Greece, with Scotland delighted that the defeat had not proved terminal for its chances of automatic qualification.

“That's what we wanted [to still have a chance of qualifying automatically],” the Liverpool left-back told BBC Sport.

“Today is such a strange game. We cannot concede three goals; that's hugely disappointing.

“We had eight or nine really big chances, so we got the attacking bit right tonight, but we didn't get the defensive stuff right.

At 31, this could be Robertson's last chance to play at a World Cup

“We could've come away with a draw and nobody would've said that at 3-0 down. A draw wouldn't have mattered anyway because Denmark drew.

“Winner takes all on Tuesday, that's all we could ask for. People were writing us off from the start of the group now we've got a shoot-out to win the group and it's all to play for on Tuesday.

“We're disappointed with the result today, but to have a final against Denmark at home, with a play-off still in the bag, what more can you ask for?”

Former Red Gannon-Doak added: “3-0 for any team is a bit too much, but I'm a bit more pleased with the team performance this time round compared to last time. Hopefully, we can take that into Tuesday because we've still got a chance.

“It's all about results and I just want what's best for the team, I'm just happy to score my first goal.”
