Andy Robertson's dream transfer in doubt as 'heartless' worry voiced

Andy Robertson's Liverpool contract is expiring, with Arne Slot preferring Milos Kerkez, sparking Celtic transfer speculation — but Pat Nevin questions if the move makes sense

Andy Robertson's hoped-for homecoming to Celtic has been questioned by Pat Nevin, who believes the club might take a "heartless" approach and reject the move.

The Liverpool left-back was let go by his boyhood side as a youngster and forged his path to the summit through sheer determination, progressing from Queen's Park to Dundee United before securing a transfer to Hull in England.

The Scotland skipper's stint at Anfield, where he's turned out over 350 times, looks to be drawing to a close. His deal is expiring, and he's no longer among Arne Slot's first-choice selections, with Milos Kerkez typically favored in that role.

This has sparked rumors of a potential return to Celtic, though legitimate doubts exist about how he and Kieran Tierney would both feature in the side.

Nevin suggests that if Celtic springs a surprise and persuades Martin O'Neill to remain for another season, he wouldn't hesitate to adopt a Scotland-esque back five to accommodate both players.

Yet he also acknowledges the "heartless" factors surrounding Robertson's age and absence of resale potential.

Speaking to AceOdds, Nevin said: "It's interesting because without all the technical stuff about styles et cetera, Tierney and Robertson, when they play for Scotland, in a back three, one of them, usually Tierney, is the left center-back.

"He played there for Arsenal quite a few times and was very good at that.

"Scotland are amazing down the left-hand side because they work well as a pair. So can you play with both of them in the same team? Yes, you can.

"Robertson can play as a wing-back, and Tierney can play the CB role, so can Robbo.

"The only problem is how do you fit that into a 4-2-3-1, which is what most teams are playing. That's harder.

"If Martin O'Neill stays at Celtic, which I don't know if he will, he always used to use a back three when he was first there and it was incredibly successful.

"It'll come down to the cost because I'm afraid Celtic have a lot of other jobs to do other than left-back. They've got creative jobs to do. They'll get Jota back next season which will make a big difference.

"So it's a nice idea, and it would fit well, but it is also A) costly and B), if you're going to be utterly heartless about it, there ain't no sell-on value. And that's not Celtic's model, most of the time."
