Andy Robertson sent Liverpool transfer warning as 'timing' not right

Scotland captain Andy Robertson has been cautioned that the "timing" of a potential move to Celtic is not right as he reaches a crucial juncture at Liverpool.

The left-back is entitled to enter discussions with clubs outside England from January 1 regarding a pre-contract agreement before potentially departing as a free agent in the summer. Robertson attracted significant attention from Atletico Madrid last summer following Liverpool's acquisition of Bournemouth's Milos Kerkez.

A transfer to La Liga ultimately collapsed with the 31-year-old choosing to remain and compete for a starting position at Anfield this season. Arne Slot has favored the Scotland star in recent weeks over Kerkez.

Yet Robertson has encountered restricted playing time and has acknowledged that discussions regarding a fresh Liverpool contract have not yet commenced.

With Robertson guiding Scotland toward the World Cup, speculation has intensified that he might depart the Premier League team to increase his match appearances ahead of the tournament.

The defender started his career at Celtic as a youngster and is currently being connected with a return to Glasgow's east end - having previously expressed his desire to join the Hoops while he remains capable of making a meaningful contribution.

However, former Celtic defender Kelvin Wilson believes it is not the appropriate time for Robertson to join the Scottish team following Scotland teammate Kieran Tierney's arrival from Arsenal last summer.

Speaking to Gambling.com at the Scottish Masters, Wilson said: "He is a winner with great experience.

"They have already brought Kieran Tierney back [last summer] so it's another left-back you're bringing in - but he's going to bring quality.

"He's coming towards the end of his career, but he's been a great player who's achieved some unbelievable things.

"He was a world-class left-back in his prime, but I just don't know if it would be the wrong timing for what Celtic want to do going forward."

Should Robertson leave, former Liverpool star Danny Murphy believes the club would be losing its best-ever left-back.

He told talkSPORT: "In terms of longevity and consistency (he is the best ever).

"The things he has won - okay, he has not won as much as people (who were playing) when Liverpool won every year - but he has still been part of a really successful era. He has made that postion his own for years."
