Anthony Gordon has done his hometown club a huge favor, with his goal against Chelsea providing Liverpool with the perfect opportunity to make a decisive move in the race for Champions League qualification.
The former Anfield academy product scored the only goal of the game as Newcastle claimed a 1-0 victory at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, boosting the Magpies hopes of securing European football for next season while putting a major dent into their opponents’ own ambitions.
Chelsea is of course locked in a four-way battle with Liverpool, Manchester United and Aston Villa to secure a spot in next season’s Champions League, with the Blues missing the chance to put some daylight between themselves and the Reds.

Arne Slot’s side will now have the chance to go three points clear of their rivals when they host crisis-ridden Tottenham at Anfield on Sunday, when they could also have the chance to move into the top four.
With United hosting Villa before the Reds face Spurs, a win for Michael Carrick’s side would give Liverpool the chance to also move above Villa, given it boasts a superior goal difference than Unai Emery’s side.

It’s an opportunity that Liverpool can ill-afford to pass up, especially with the potential for its fixture list to become even more congested over the next couple of months.
Speaking about his aims for the remainder of the season, Slot said in his press conference on Friday: "What I want is that I am able [to help] every single player get the maximum out of everything until the end of the season. That is the aim for me and the players, I am sure.

"It's the only way to get the maximum of what is in it for us. Sometimes we need a bit of luck, like the last-16 last year, penalties, so close to beating PSG and they went on to win it. So the margins are small, and we have to fight for them to make them bigger and bigger every day."
Liverpool.com says: Liverpool simply can’t let this opportunity slip now. Far too often the Reds have let themselves down when the door has been opened for them by their rivals - that cannot happen this weekend.
Missing out on the chance to move above Chelsea and potentially Aston Villa by dropping more points against a beleaguered Tottenham side would be a new low this season. It adds more pressure, but Liverpool MUST find a way to win on Sunday.
