Anthony Gordon has been advised against a transfer move to Liverpool this summer, with Bayern Munich emerging as the leading contender to sign him from Newcastle.

The England ace, who Liverpool has been keen on in the past, has also been linked with Arsenal. But a move to Germany could make sense as he looks to take the next step in his career.

Liverpool, who agreed a $100 million (£75 million) deal to sign Gordon in 2024, have been touted as a potential destination for Gordon too, but Tim Sherwood believes that going to Bayern Munich would be the best option.

"The Newcastle fan base would likely say, 'If you don't want to be at this club, just leave'," Sherwood told Boyle Sports.

"The club would try to get the maximum amount of money for him, and I think his value would be very high. However, he hasn't performed consistently, especially in the Premier League, though he did score quite a few goals in the Champions League run.

"I'm not sure he can stay at the club. We saw it with Alexander Isak: if you make it known you want to leave, you have to go. So, yes, I could see that happening."

Given the choice between Liverpool and Bayern Munich, though, Sherwood would move to Germany.

"Liverpool would be a headache for him due to the Everton past; it's too much aggravation," the pundit added. "It's different if Liverpool is his only option; you'd push for it.

"But if you have Liverpool alongside Bayern Munich, who offer Champions League football, and are probably favorites to win the Champions League this year, it's a decent option to consider.

"A different culture, a different lifestyle, just go and try it. He's still a young man, and I think he'll have a lot of options, but I don't think there are many better options than Bayern.

"Liverpool is right up there. I think it's a toss-up between the two, really. We're still talking about the champions of the Premier League, but they've had a poor run, being out of all the domestic cup competitions.

"It hasn't been a fantastic season for them, and there's a little bit of uncertainty there, rather than at Bayern Munich, where you know there's certainty and it's all systems go in the same direction.

"However, if Bayern is strong in any position, it's across the front three or four. They have some players, so he's not guaranteed to start ahead of Luis Diaz, Michael Olise, or Serge Gnabry.

"They also have Jamal Musiala, who is coming back now, and Harry Kane. He would need to be able to play across the front, which I think he's shown he can do.

"That might be why there is an attraction for him. He can play down the middle, left, or right. He has that flexibility, but I wouldn't suggest he's guaranteed to start there."

Liverpool.com says: The Reds need more goals and pace in the final third and Gordon would definitely offer that. Newcastle, though, would surely want to avoid selling another star man to Liverpool a year on from the Isak saga.

Gordon is ready for a bigger move and he has a lot of quality. With his price tag said to be $100M this summer, that doesn't feel like bad value for someone who has scored 17 goals this season.
