Liverpool attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz got off the mark in the Premier League as his team just about got over the line against the bottom side, Wolves, at Anfield.

Ryan Gravenberch had broken the deadlock, and only a minute later, Wirtz made it 2-0. Santiago Bueno got one back for the visitor early in the second half, but Liverpool did hold on to earn the points, with Arne Slot delighted for his summer signing.

"I could see with his reaction and with his teammates, they were really happy for him," Slot said in his post-match press conference. "In football, we get judged on results and individuals get judged on goals and assists.

"We sometimes then forget what else is there to do. I think he has multiple good games, but I also think he is getting better every game he is playing.

"He is fitter and fitter and was getting closer and closer to his first goal, and it is not a surprise he scores today."

However, Slot added."He will probably be the first to understand that one goal is not enough.

"He will score much more goals for us than this one, but I also liked his performance today. I think he was special in a lot of moments."

Wirtz was a frequent scorer in the Bundesliga and has been creating plenty of chances for his teammates while in England. This, though, will do no harm for his confidence.

"It was very nice the feeling on the pitch with the fans around," Wirtz said. "I was very happy and I still am.

"I was confident that I would score one day. I wanted to start earlier scoring and assisting but it was like this and I have to accept it.

"I just know that it will come and I try to keep going like that.

"We played a brilliant first half. We lost the game and got it back. Everyone was working hard. In the last 20 minutes, we made it a bit difficult. I cannot explain why. We have to change that.

"That's how we want to do it. We want to be there and be on top of the table. It's not been an easy start for us but we're doing better and getting the points."
