Arne Slot makes Liverpool transfer point with Jeremie Frimpong claim

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot was pleased with the result against Wolves, even if there is more work to be done — but he made a transfer point about the likes of Jeremie Frimpong

Liverpool might have spent around $600M on new players in the summer, but that didn't tell the full story, as Arne Slot was keen to point out when giving his assessment of Jeremie Frimpong.

Squeezing over the line against Wolves in the Premier League, Frimpong and Florian Wirtz, both signed from Bayer Leverkusen in the previous transfer window, were impressive performers. But Slot was at pains to point out that his side has not always been able to call upon the players, like them, who were signed ahead of this season.

"A lot has been said by so many people about the amount of money that we spent, but no one talked about what has been recouped and that we sold so many," Slot said.

"From the players we bought, we unfortunately couldn’t see the best of Alex [Isak], Giovanni Leoni has been injured since his first game, and Frimpong has hardly played as well.

"We were not always able to use the players we brought in. Jeremie is an example. If he is fit, he can definitely help us. Last week he had the assist against Tottenham and today a great assist against Wolves today.

"Pace, that is so important. The first goal was pure individual ability. That is the pace I always wanted to bring in during the summer with Hugo Ekitike and Jeremie and Alex as well. But not all of the money we have spent, we have used."

Ekitike laid on Wirtz's goal with a good pass into his feet, but Isak is set to be absent for some time with a broken leg. Leoni will be out for the season, while injuries to existing players have hampered both rotation and consistency.

"I think unfortunately we conceded the goal quite early on [in the second half] and that gives them a big boost and some momentum for them to crack on," Virgil van Dijk told Liverpool's official website.

"I think we played a very, very good first half and [scored] two good goals. [In] possession we were good, defensively we were solid and [had] no problems.

"Obviously they would come out with a lot more pressure [in the second half] and we have to try and do the same things, which [is what] we said at half-time.

"Unfortunately, we couldn't do that, but obviously that's also part of how Wolves did that.

"Overall, we found a way and that is key, especially in the season and in the moment where we are and where we have a lot of injuries and players missing. It's not an excuse for the second half, but obviously it's good that we got the win and that's very important."

Liverpool.com says: By the time Wolves scored, the Reds should have been out of sight. In large part, though, that was to do with how well Frimpong played. This was the best showing from him so far in a Liverpool jersey, and very much something to build on.
