Liverpool head coach Arne Slot felt that the penalty awarded after Alexis Mac Allister went down in the second half against PSG should have stood after it was chalked off.

Referee Maurizio Mariani pointed to the spot when Mac Allister went down under a challenge from Willian Pacho, but was then instructed to head over to the screen to double-check his decision. There was very little in the way of a challenge on the Liverpool ace, and though there was contact, the man in the middle opted to cancel his initial call.

"If you look at our season, I am completely not surprised because so many decisions have gone against us," Slot said on Amazon Prime.

"For me, it is quite simple: if the referee did not give a penalty, the VAR would never have intervened.

"As I said, I don't think it is a surprise this season, not just the Champions League, but also in the Premier League, many decisions have gone against us.

"But we couldn't score a goal and we had many chances."

Liverpool put in a performance that was worthy of credit, but it ultimately wasn't enough. The Reds failed to make the breakthrough at Anfield and then Ousmane Dembele netted a brace to seal their fate.

"We got much more than we deserved last week by only losing 2-0, like last season," Slot said.

"Also, the same as last season today we got much less than we deserved. We should have won but it is from the quality of them why they don't concede.

"Last week was of course tough and very difficult but we showed in a week that we can improve a lot and it is a big compliment to the players that they showed how they could be.

"The players kept on going, even after going 1-0 down and that is a big compliment to them.

"If you look at the xG, we should have scored two but didn't score one and that has happened far too often this season."

Liverpool faces Everton next in the Premier League. Its only aim for the remainder of this season is to ensure that it gets into the top five spots domestically and is therefore playing Champions League soccer again next term.
