Arne Slot told to 'step up' by Liverpool legend as patience starts to run out

Liverpool legend John Aldridge has urged Reds head coach Arne Slot to "step up" following Saturday's 3-2 defeat at Brentford.

The Reds have now suffered four consecutive Premier League losses and could find themselves seven points adrift of Arsenal if the Gunners triumph over Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Brentford took an early lead around five minutes in, with Dango Ouattara capitalizing on a classic long throw from the Bees. Kevin Schade then exploited a gaping hole in Liverpool's defence to double the hosts' advantage. Just before half-time, Milos Kerkez offered a glimmer of hope for Slot's side by finding the back of the net.

However, Brentford quickly re-established its two-goal lead from the penalty spot after a VAR review deemed Virgil van Dijk guilty of a foul in the Liverpool box.

A late goal from Mohamed Salah added some drama to the proceedings in London, but the Reds couldn't conjure up an equalizer.

This latest defeat left Liverpool sitting in sixth place ahead of Sunday's matches.

Expressing his concern over Liverpool's recent form, former Reds forward Aldridge pointed out that Slot's players have now lost five of their last six games across all competitions.

"That's so disappointing and concerning in many many way not just tonight but this season defensively shocking," he expressed on X.

"No cohesion desire taking responsibilities etc!! Arne has to step up big-time."

When asked by TNT Sports for his thoughts post-match, Slot responded: "If Mo goes on a scoring run, it's definitely going to be important for the team.

"But it's about scoring goals and also about not conceding goals. For so many games now we've conceded one, two or three goals. Every time in the first five minutes also.

"It would help the team to have players who score the goals, but it would also help if we are able as a team to keep a clean sheet.

"It's not only what the last line [of defence] does, we have to do it as a whole team. We have to do better.

"You prefer to have all your players available. That's not the situation. It's the players we do have available need to bring the results in.

"That's something you can have in a season. You have to win duels. That's not happening with us now. That is something I'm not liking."
