Rumors that Arsenal might swoop in to snatch Alexander Isak from under Liverpool's nose have been firmly quashed by the club.
Arsenal, having shown interest in Isak previously, are now watching as the 26-year-old Newcastle striker becomes the target of a bid from Liverpool, with both the player and the reigning Premier League champions eager for him to lead their revamped frontline.
Newcastle, however, is reluctant to part with its leading man, and it's up in the air whether a resolution can be found before the transfer window concludes on Sept. 1.
While many anticipate Liverpool will clinch the deal for the Swedish forward, an injury to Kai Havertz this week fueled speculation that Arsenal could join the fray in what's shaping up to be the summer's most talked-about transfer tale.
The Independent reported that such chatter was prevalent among 'senior officials' at the PFA awards, coinciding with Isak's own bombshell statement on social media.
However, the publication noted that Arsenal swiftly dismissed these rumors, stating there was "No chance" they would enter the bidding war.
The Gunners have since wrapped up a deal to bring Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace to the Emirates.
Isak's future at Newcastle is hanging in the balance as the summer transfer window draws to a close. In a candid statement, Isak levelled accusations at the club for 'breaking promises' and made it clear that his relationship with Newcastle "can't continue".
The forward was notably absent from Newcastle's Premier League kick-off last weekend and won't feature on Monday either, when the Magpies head to Anfield to face Liverpool.
Eddie Howe acknowledged the ongoing impasse between Isak and the club as a "lose-lose situation" in his Friday press briefing.
"It's a sad moment. The fact that this has become public doesn't cast a good light on us or Alex. It's been a regrettable couple of months that seems like it will reach a conclusion soon."
Howe also expressed his uncertainty about how the situation would pan out, stating: "I'm not a fortune teller. I've got no way of knowing what will happen in the next few days. But he's contracted to us, he's our player."
