Arsenal have done what Man Utd and Liverpool couldn't as Bukayo Saka decision speaks volumes

Unlike Chelsea, Liverpool, and Manchester United, Arsenal have managed to build a title-contending outfit around an academy product: Bukayo Saka. The 24-year-old winger looks set to sign a lucrative new contract, extending his stay at the Emirates Stadium.

football.london understands that Saka verbally agreed to new terms back in January, with his previous deal set to expire in June 2027. The England international, who celebrated his goal against Wolves with a pen and paper gesture, has seemingly committed his peak years to the Gunners.

The agreement will give Arsenal a much-needed boost after a terrible start to the new year. The north Londoners have won just three of their last eight Premier League games while dropping seven points from winning positions.

The Gunners have also failed to win from a leading position in three of their last five English top-flight matches. Arsenal still have a five-point cushion at the top of the table, but they've left the door open for Manchester City to snatch the title.

Mikel Arteta will also hope the deal gives Saka a new lease of life. The Hale End graduate has largely disappointed for a while now, scoring just six goals in 32 appearances in the Premier League since the start of 2025.

In fact, the Englishman ended a 10-game goal drought in the English top-flight at Molineux on Wednesday night. That said, his importance in the Arsenal starting lineup mustn't be understated, having played a key role for many years.

Saka has been central to Arteta's efforts to transform the Gunners into one of the strongest teams in Europe. The talisman helped Arsenal win the FA Cup at an empty Wembley Stadium during COVID back in August 2020.

Saka hasn't won a major trophy with the Gunners since, but he has helped them mount numerous bids for the Premier League title, as well as reach the UEFA Champions League semi-final in May 2025 and the Carabao Cup final in March 2026.

While Chelsea, Liverpool, and Manchester United have each won more trophies during the same period, none have managed to build a title-contending team around an academy product.

The Blues have lost the likes of Mason Mount and Conor Gallagher in the past, while the Merseyside outfit and the Red Devils waved goodbye to Trent Alexander-Arnold and Scott McTominay, respectively, in the summer.

Saka will hope to have the last laugh later this year, with Arsenal still competing on all fronts. Earlier this season, Arteta was asked whether he'd like to see the winger sign a new deal.

The Spaniard said: "I would love that. From everything that I know, he is a player that is extremely happy, and proud to have the role that he has at the football club.

"Things will develop in a natural way, like they always do, and everyone knows how important Bukayo is for us. Hopefully, we can do it."
