Outspoken broadcaster and Arsenal fan Piers Morgan reckons the Gunners could wrap the Premier League title up as soon as March and will face limited competition from 'overrated' Liverpool. The former newspaper editor has been filled with enthusiasm following the north London side's win over Newcastle.
Mikel Arteta's men came from behind at St James' Park to earn a vital three points and closed the gap to Liverpool to two points after the Reds slipped up against Crystal Palace. Goals from Mikel Merino and Gabriel Magalhaes saw Arsenal claim a dramatic stoppage-time win after Nick Woltemade's first-half header in a fiery affair.
The result saw the Gunners bounce back from a criticised draw against Manchester City, and Morgan has taken confidence from the start of the season. While Liverpool are currently ahead of his side, the television star believes the difficulty of opponents faced so far gives Arsenal the edge.
Arne Slot's side have required winning goals later than 80 minutes in their first four Premier League games. They were unable to find one against the Eagles as ex-Arsenal forward Eddie Nkeitah instead found a 97th-minute winner.
Morgan is now confident about Arsenal's title chances. The 60-year-old thinks it could be a comfortable process.
"100 per cent. Arsenal will win the Premier League," said Morgan, speaking on talkSPORT's Breakfast with Jeff Stelling and Gabby Agbonlahor.
"Liverpool are overrated. They've been very lucky, and look at the games we've had to play so far.
"Arsenal have had by far the tougher start to the league, and look where we are. We are going to win the league. I wouldn't be surprised if we win it by mid-March."
"It is exciting," he added. "If you ask me can we win the league this season? I though last night in the 96th minute, there was a mentality change by both the team, but also, crucially, the manager. He took the handbrake off.
"If Mikel Arteta is listening to this. This handbrake thing is not a joke. You have the players that can terrorise any defence in the world - let them loose, and we will win the league."
It would appear Arteta's thinking is not too dissimilar to that of Morgan. Asked how important it was to get three points after Liverpool's defeat to Palace, the Spaniard suggested it could be significant.
Arteta said: "Well, yes, there are moments in the season, and obviously, with the style that we had already and the difficult fixtures that we had, today we had the opportunity to close that gap. And do it in a stadium that has a very recent and difficult past for us. I think it shows how much the team wants it.
"Yeah, the belief, the conviction of the team that we are and that we can play various types of games and the team still can deliver and win it in a convincing way," Arteta added when asked what the result does to his squad's belief.
"And for me today, it's one of the most difficult grounds. Again, praise Newcastle, the way they play, compete, how difficult it is to play in this place. But the team really took the game to a different level, and I'm very proud to see that."
