Michael Owen has given his prediction on the Premier League title race with Arsenal currently leading the way in the table.

Former Premier League striker Michael Owen has backed Arsenal to win the league ahead of his former club Liverpool, following the Gunners' strong start to the season.

Mikel Arteta's side currently sit top of the Premier League table, having picked up 19 points from their opening eight games of the season. They are three points clear of nearest rivals Manchester City.

It comes after Liverpool were early pacesetters. But three losses in a row have seen Arsenal take advantage and leapfrog their title rivals.

"I tipped Liverpool to win the Premier League before the season, but now, I'd say Arsenal. They look strong," he told SkyBet . "But Liverpool are still a very good side and not far off. I don’t fancy Manchester City as much this year.

"My current top four would be Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City, and Chelsea. For relegation, I'd probably say Leeds, Burnley, and Wolves. Nottingham Forest might escape it with their managerial change, but those three look most at risk."

Owen's opinion brings him in line with former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger who has backed the Gunners to end their 23-year wait for a Premier League title. The Gunners last won the title back in 2003/04 when Wenger was in charge.

When asked if he sees Arsenal as title contenders he told beIN SPORTS : "Yes, without any hesitation. You might say that I say that every year but I believe this year they are really equipped to deal with any problems.

"When they lost Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka last season it was too much but this year you have [Noni] Madueke, [Eberechi] Eze, [Gabriel] Martinelli, [Leandro] Trossard.

"At the back they have [Cristhian] Mosquera, down the flanks and at the back they have replacements. [Myles] Lewis-Skelly doesn't get in the team at the moment and he's an England international.

"I think they have the most complete squad. Compare them with Liverpool, I watched them against Chelsea and [Dominik] Szoboszlai was at right-back and [Ryan] Gravenberch was centre-back. Arsenal would not be in that kind of position."

Arsenal are back in Premier League action on Sunday when they host Crystal Palace at the Emirates Stadium.
