Athekame discusses growth path at Milan, his preferred position and Allegri’s words

Zachary Athekame has shared his first words since completing the move to AC Milan from Young Boys, speaking to the club’s official channels.

After reaching an agreement with Young Boys at around €10m, Milan announced the signing of Athekame on Friday morning. The right-back has hit the ground running, making his first training session at Milanello, and he should be called up for the Bari game tomorrow.

Speaking to MilanTV for his first official interview as a Milan player, Athekame shared his thoughts on the move, what he expects to learn in Italy, his preferred position, and what Max Allegri told him upon joining the team.

Welcome Zachary, it’s your first day at AC Milan. Can you tell us how you feel?

“Hello, first of all a lot of pride, I’m very happy. I can’t wait to get started.”

You wore the Rossoneri colours at Neuchâtel. Did you ever imagine one day coming to Milan?

“Yes, of course. I’ve already worn these colours. I like them a lot, and I’m very happy to wear them again.”

You’ll be one of the youngest players in the team. How do you think you’ll fit in and what would you like to learn from your new teammates?

“Yes, I’m one of the youngest in the squad. I think there’s a lot of experience in this team and I need to learn from each of these players to keep improving. I’m really happy about that.”

You’ve arrived at Milan just a few days after Ardon Jashari. You played with him for Switzerland U21. Have you spoken about this new step you’re taking together?

“Yes, I know Ardon from Switzerland U21. I’ve already spoken with him. I’m really looking forward to seeing him again at training.”

What do you know about AC Milan and Serie A, and what do you think are your traits that will best fit Italian football?

“I know Serie A. I’ve already watched a lot of matches. Serie A is a very tactical league. I think I can bring my personality, my character, and I want to help the team as much as possible.”

What changes do you expect in moving from the Swiss Super League to Serie A?

“I think it’s a completely different league. In Italy, it’s more tactical than in Switzerland. I’m very excited to start and to learn from my teammates, and I’ll be very attentive in order to improve alongside them.”

What is your preferred position on the pitch?

“I’m a right-back. I can also play as a wing-back, in a 3-5-2. Those are my positions.”

Have you spoken with Allegri and what did he tell you?

“Yes, I’ve already spoken with the coach. He told me that in Italy, it’s a good league for defenders, a place to learn tactically, and I’m really excited to start.”

What do you expect from this adventure, and how determined are you to give your maximum every day?

“Honestly, I only expect positive things from this adventure. I can’t wait to start at this great club. I expect to learn a lot and help the team as much as possible. I come here determined and full of ambition.”

What are your strengths and what can you still improve?

“I think I can improve in every area. As you said, I’m a young player, so I still have a lot to work on. I’m joining a great club, with great players, and now it’s up to me to learn as much as possible every day whether in training or in matches. In any case, I’m ready to play for this team.”

Have you ever been to San Siro? How do you imagine your first moment at the stadium?

“No, honestly, San Siro is one of those legendary stadiums we’ve all talked about. The atmosphere is exceptional. It’s a massive, global fanbase. I really can’t wait to start playing there.”

Look at the camera and send your first message to the Milan fans…

“Ciao tifosi, I’m very happy to be here. I can’t wait to start, see you at the stadium!”

As said, Athekame will be called up for tomorrow’s game (by all accounts) but he’s not really expected to play. Milan have to win the game and Allegri is expected to rely on the players who have featured a decent amount already.
